- $ $31.97/HourThe City of Port Moody has an exciting opportunity for a current student with a background in sustainability, resource management, community planning, environmental science or a related field to join our team this summer as a Sustainability Research Assistant.


The Sustainability Research Summer Student will assist in completing actions included in the City's Phase Two Climate Action Implementation Plan and gain experience in areas such as sustainability planning, energy and sustainable resource use, building energy and greenhouse gas performance, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and community engagement.


This position will provide specialized research and analytical support for Climate Action Plan initiatives, maintain sustainability matrices, and develop and present reports and recommendations to the Climate Action team and other city staff.

Strong analytical skills and basic GIS skills are desirable, including skills in data analysis and interpretation. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for collaboration and outreach efforts.

The incumbent should demonstrate attention to detail and time management and must be able to work independently under mínimal supervision.- Supporting Sustainability staff by conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, and collaborating with internal departments and external consultants.


  • Assisting with report writing, preparing presentations, and organizing stakeholder/public consultations.
  • Researching emerging best practices from other local municipalities and understanding regulatory and government requirements.
  • Assisting in the development and analysis of datasets related to community resilience, emissions, and energy use.
  • Engaging with experts and local groups to disseminate findings and gather feedback.
  • Advancing existing department initiatives with a focus on mitigation and adaptation, including efforts to reduce GHG emissions and response to climaterelated hazards.
  • Supporting Sustainability staff in implementing the Climate Action Plan, Extreme Weather Resilience Plan, and Climate Ready Homes and Buildings Plan.
  • Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-secondary education, preferably in one or more of the following fields: sustainability, resource management, community planning, environmental science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience involving research, data analysis and interpretation, basic GIS skills or community engagement.
  • Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing and engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must be returning to fulltime postsecondary studies in the following semester.
  • Preferred Experience:
  • Public speaking or presenting a specific topic or workshop to a wide audience.
  • Basic knowledge of Climate action/ Sustainability work within the BC Lower Mainland.
  • Familiarity with climate justice concepts.
  • Experience with research and report writing.
  • Experience with data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Experience with GIS and ESRI (e.g., Collector, Field Maps and Explorer), and database collection/analysis.
