Ashlyn Loucks

As a dedicated and passionate Environmental Scientist, I have had the privilege of working for the Canadian Hydrographic Service as a Physical Data Scientist since 2022, where I apply my skills in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing to contribute to the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation. 

I recently graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (Manga Cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa, which equipped me with skills in understanding Earth systems, climate change, research and analysis, field work, environmental policy and management, conservation and sustainability. During my studies, I completed an undergraduate thesis under the supervision of Dr. Oliver Warr, where I researched the contribution of landfills to Canada's methane budget, and climate change. 

Currently, I am proud to continue my role at the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and to continue pursuing my career as an employee with the Government of Canada, contributing to furthering Canada's goals and making a positive impact.

As a Student Physical Data Information Officer at the Canadian Hydrographic Service, I gained significant GIS experiences using ArcGIS Pro, developed Python scripts, and utilized the Arcpy module for ArcGIS Pro to update maps of Canada’s coastlines. This experience enhanced my geospatial skills, allowed me to deliver high-quality results promptly to clients, strengthened my teamwork abilities, and improved my project management and communications skills.

Graduating Magma Cum Laude with an Honours BSc in Environmental Science, I have a solid understanding of environmental science, including the effect of greenhouse gases. During this time I took multiple courses on Environment Impact Assessments, and wrote reports on different project proposals and reviews of Environmental Impact Assessments. During my studies I was recognized with several scholarships, including the O’Connor Associates Environmental Scholarship and the Robert J. Gorman Scholarship, and have consistently maintained a position on the Dean’s List. My academic accomplishments reflect my dedication and hard work, which I am eager to bring to your team.

My field and lab research experience, including field research on glaciers in the St. Elias Mountains and my undergraduate honours thesis studying methane emissions in Canada, has provided me with hands-on experience in conducting experiments, analyzing data, and reporting findings. These projects have strengthened my technical skills and my ability to work independently and collaboratively in challenging environments. As well, this experience solidified my ability to conduct fieldwork both short term day trips, and two-week periods in remote locations.
