About Dylan White:
I am Indigenous professional committed to a life of intergenerational healing and mass construction to make a positive change in the social determinants of health that effect all FNMI communities on Turtle Island.
Experience
Since graduating from university with a four-year honors degree in Criminology and a minor in First Nation Studies I have gained some incredible experience working in surrounding First Nations and as an urban Indigenous service provider. I spent three years after graduating from university working as a program coordinator facilitating wholistic healthy living programs and services that included multiple educational and training sessions for participants. My passion for community wellness led me into an exciting policing career working within a First Nation. It was my hope that in policing, I could be more helpful in high-risk situations and moments that would require someone trained in cultural sensitivity to de-escalate difficult situations. It was in my policing career that I began to understand a deeper understanding of trauma and the lack of ability as a police officer to address this trauma in emergency situations. I quickly understood my purpose was not to be reactive to traumatic situations, but rather pursue preventative and proactive alternatives to wellness that would provide lasting healing.
I have had this opportunity to solidify my purpose in life for the last two years as I focused on each participants whole self within a hospital setting. I have had the privilege of personally servicing over eight-hundred participants in two years from over twenty First Nations, three Metis Nations and one Inuit community. I have completed fifty-eight educational workshops to physicians, nurses, social workers, and staff across numerous hospital departments. I have worked along Indigenous midwives and management teams to co-create the design for an Indigenous specific birthing room that is the first of its kind. I was consulted to do a land acknowledgment and turned this conversation into a completed design with secured fundraising for the creation of a traditional medicine garden, allowing Indigenous patients to be prescribed nature as care and reconnect to the land that is rightfully theirs.
I look forward to any opportunity that might lead me to further understanding and impact for Indigenous communities in Ontario.
