Harish Kumar Arasakumar

I am a third-year accounting co-op student studying at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada looking for internship in relevant field in accounting and finance. 

My work experience spans various roles in finance, focusing on internal controls, financial reporting, and credit assessment within the oil industry, along with an internship in financial data analysis in Qatar. At Irving Oil Limited in New Brunswick, Canada, from September to December 2023, the role involved testing controls across departments and conducting financial reporting for different process owners. I also supported the Accounts Payable team with vendor reconciliations and contributed to financial planning and analysis for the upcoming quarter.

From January to May 2023, I worked under the Order to Cash team at the same company, This role involved evaluation of the credit history of fleet operations using services like DNB and TU, overseeing more than 200 accounts. Assessing the risk of major accounts in various sectors, including wholesale, supply, trade, marine grade oil, and jet fuel, were pivotal. Recovering significant amounts from inactive accounts by reassessing their business standing and suggesting strategic approaches for managing high-risk accounts were also few of the projects I undertook, it helped me gain analytical and problem-solving skills.

In my position as a Finance Intern at CXO Prime LLC in Qatar from May to July 2022, I developed technical skills by preparing balance sheets and profit/loss statements for clients, utilizing financial data. This experience allowed me to gain proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting, and reporting, laying a strong foundation for my subsequent roles. 

I am a third-year accounting co-op student enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program that spans for four years. The program is designed to equip students with the judgment and technical skills necessary for external financial reporting, as well as developing internal information for management planning and control. In the initial two years all the students have to attain credit hours which is immersed in core courses across various disciplines such as accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, and organizational behavior. This foundational phase is followed by the selection of electives in the third and fourth years, allowing students to tailor their degree according to their strengths and interests​.

For the students deciding to major in accounting. Dalhousie University's program emphasizes both the acquisition of deep technical knowledge and the development of analytical skills essential for a career in accounting. Students are required to achieve a minimum average in introductory accounting courses to proceed with the accounting major. The curriculum includes advanced courses in financial accounting, auditing, taxation, and cost management, preparing students for potential careers in government, non-profit organizations, and corporate sectors. Graduates often pursue the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, which can enhance their career prospects and earning potential​.
