About Jimmy D:

Dear Sir/Madam, My name is James R. Diegel and am interested in a teaching position at your school. My job history and experience although untraditional is extensive and I suspect that once you have had the chance to familiarize yourself with what it is I bring to the table, you’ll be excited for the opportunity I could bring. Originally from small town Ontario, Canada, I began my post secondary quest for education in Thunder Bay where I completed an Undergraduate degree in Philosophy with accompanying Minors in both Occupational Ethics and History.

That said, my first foray into teaching actually involved teaching ESL in Japan to primary and secondary students which I also have a qualification granted from the Canadian Global TESOL Training Institute. After some time I understood that education was something I cared deeply about and would be a great opportunity for me to relay the knowledge and and passion that I personally had acquired during my younger years of study. Thus for my second stint as a student I decided to return to school for a Masters of Education post graduate degree at Hawai’i Pacific University. Graduating with honors, and in doing so also obtaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education, I became registered in the state of Hawai’i through the HTSB in the field of Social Studies for grades 7-12.

Hawai’i being at the forefront of equal opportunity education and challenging the status quo of what education means to the early residents of the state, I found my understanding from my previous years in Thunder Bay and Japan quite useful in that the cultivated understanding of diversity melded quite well with the disciplines I set out to teach. On top of that, it was in Hawai’i that I had found permaculture, a design science developed in Australia and specifically designed to bolster local natural ecosystems in the most environmental way. Being in love with the outdoors already, it did not take much thought to realize that being a trained and educated Permaculture designer and teacher was the most logical next step.

For my third foray of study then, it was off to the South Pacific to complete two Permaculture Design Certifications. For the first I was based in New Zealand and helped during the course of my studies to design a rejuvenation plan for part of the local Tui community that had suffered a variety of natural disasters. Upon completion of this course I decided to take one more certification Australian Institute of Permaculture, gaining my second PDC accreditation alongside a specialty in Earthworks for the purpose of sustainable ecosystem design.

Having a deep rooted history and affinity for Japan, I decided upon completion of these classes to return and take up a position as a University professor at various institutions within Kansai, one of the cultural capitals of the country. During this time I worked to improve my standing as both an educator and writer, a hobby I had dabbled with and eventually turned into a sustainable side gig writing for a variety of organizations that requested my services. Although living abroad offered the ability to travel and learn first hand in a great number of countries and regions of the world, returning to Canada with my family had always been inevitable at least for a short time to allow my children an invaluable experience with family and friends.

Professionally speaking, it is my hope that through my extensive experience that students will be able to relate more directly to the world around them they are learning about. In reality, what lies above is just the beginning of my story. For the last 20 years I have worked to both learn and relay the the things necessary to my students going above and beyond the call of duty. Of course schooling is a requirement for success these days, but in my humble opinion, education is much more. We live in a world that more intertwined than ever before; a world sometimes difficult to grasp and navigate through the hustle and bustle of the present era, especially for youth that often find themselves unheard and misunderstood. The relevance is there, and for the most part all the majority of students need to get them to the place they need to be for success is someone to bring about a connection that charts a path through the maze that is their passions and desires. I believe that I just happen to be such an individual.

For more on what I bring to the table qualification and experience wise, please do take a gander at my professional CV and Online Education Portfolio. I’m positive neither will disappoint.

Sincerely,

James R. Diegel, M.Ed.

Experience

My professional experience has been a varied and international one.  I began my foray into education by studying a BA in Philosophy with minors in History and Occupational Ethics.  Upon completion of my degree I decided to enroll into a TESOL training certificate course and head off to Japan to teach ESL.  Working my way up through the public school education system, teaching was something I was quite passionate about, so it made logical sense to pursue a career into this in the field of history and social studies, something I was also equally as passionate about.  Thus, I found myself enrolled in the Masters of Education program at Hawai'i Pacific University.

Living, working, and studying in Hawai'i was without a doubt the experience of a lifetime.  Not only did I gain the necessary skills and qualifications to teach 7-12 humanities in American classrooms, but I also learned some valuable insights volunteering in the community and engaging in professional development incorporating culture and environment into all that I was doing.

Upon completion of my degree I decided to continue my education by taking two consecutive Permaculture Design Certifications, one in New Zealand and the other in Australia.  Finishing these up I found myself back in Japan working for a private High school teaching English, and supplementing that with some teaching at Universities.  Over time I worked towards becoming a University professor at a variety of well known institutions in the Kansai region of Japan.

About a decade into this new teaching foray, I found myself with the ambition to bring my two now very young toddlers back to Japan to reconnect with family and the English language of one of their mother countries. At present I am working on having my qualifications assessed to obtain a Canadian teachers license and work my way towards an international school teaching environment.
