About Jumana Elshaer:

I am currently teaching at Bayview Public School, located in Ottawa, ON Canada. I have recently completed an English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching assignment at Manordale Public School. Prior to that, as a first year certified teacher I began at Knoxdale Public School as an Elementary Designated Teacher (DOT). As a DOT, I have experienced teaching classrooms, of all grades, subjects, and specialities. Everyday was a new experience and a new challenge. The classes I have taught have ranged from Kindergarten to Intermediate, Special Education to ELD, Gifted to Alternative, and everything in between. I had to adapt my teaching style to accommodate different classroom environments, ensuring that I met my students needs that day. I have walked into many schools and would like to think that I left a footprint in every one. These experiences have prepared me for new challenges that may lie ahead as at teacher.

Prior to that, I was a teacher candidate at the University of Ottawa in the Primary/Junior division. During my time in the Education Program, I have gained a great understanding of the Canadian:Ontario Curriculum documents. I have also acquired additional knowledge on creating lesson and unit plans, as well as understanding the process of assessment, which developed both on campus and during practicum.

I have completed my first year practicum in a Grade 3 classroom at Greely Elementary School, where I taught lessons in Language Arts, Math, Visual Arts, and Social Studies. My second practicum was completed at Metcalfe Public School in a Grade 3/4 split classroom where I concentrated on lessons in Language Arts, Math, Science, Physical Education, Visual Arts and Social Studies for both sections. I have also developed formal skills with regards to differentiation and built strategies that address the diverse learning needs of students within the classroom. My practicum experiences have taught me that classroom management is a crucial area of focus as a teacher.

Ensuring that my students are in a safe, stimulating, and supportive environment is my mission. I have sincerely recognized that in order for students to feel a sense of belonging and inclusion, many external factors play a role. I have learned to build positive relationships with not only my students, but with the parents of my students and my fellow colleagues.

I am a patient, compassionate, and life-long learner. As a teacher, I strive to inspire learning and build confidence within my students so that they can grow to be the best versions of themselves. I will ensure that my lessons are engaging and hands-on. I want my students’ learning experience to be fun and interactive. I believe in incorporating DPA, body breaks, and meditation when appropriate throughout the day in order to promote the importance of mental, physical and emotional well-being.

Thank you for your consideration and taking the time to look over my application.

Sincerely,
Jumana El Shaer

Experience

I have experience teaching and working with students in an English as an Additional Language class. In Canada, we have two different titles for this class. The first is called ESL (English as a Second Language) as well as ELD (English Language Development).

My first experience was working with an ELD class at Charles H. Hulse Public School. Many students in this class were new to Canada, and arrived as refugees with very limited knowledge of English. Over several months, my teaching partner and I saw the development of the English language within our students. Not only did they learn to speak, read, and write; their confidence levels grew to new heights.

My second, and most recent experience was at Manordale Public School where I was an ESL teacher. Here, we focused more on the grammar of the English language. Although most of my students had limited English, many of them had made huge advancements throughout the school year. I worked with students on a one-on-on basis, which allowed me to track their progress more closely. I created individualized lesson plans for each to fit their needs.
