Michael Helfield

I am a former academic specializing in ancient history and ancient languages (Latin, Greek, and some Hebrew). In 2009, after reviewing and revising countless of my own and my students papers, I started editing my supervisor's articles and books. Over the following years, I have been able to develop a small academic client base. I have worked on texts in history, literature, philosophy, religion, anthropology, psychology, and geography.

For ten years, I worked full time for PwC Canada as a financial copy editor and proofreader. Trust me, nobody likes Certified Pubic Accountants! It took me some time to master working with financial statements, annual reports, auditing plans, valuation reports, forensic investigations, and various kinds of marketing materials. I worked with a fantastic group of editors, accountants, and professionals, who helped me a great deal along the way. 

I have a broad understanding of various topics, and a desire to always be learning more. I am easy to work with and will always ensure that you are happy with my work.

I studied Classics and ancient history and McGill, Queen's, and York universities (BA, MA, PhD – ABD). I learned ancient languages and literature as well. Part of that learning involved translating Latin, Greek and Hebrew into understandable English. I therefore have gained an ability to distill complex ideas into an easily digestible form.  

I have also attended several workshops given by Editors Canada, where I learned a great deal about the editing process and about detailed points of grammar and usage.
