About Miyou Shimoshige:
Currently, I am a fifth year student, studying Biology & Pharmacology student at McMaster University. As an ambitious, hardworking individual, I am constantly striving for opportunities to refine my skills anywhere I go. While my organizational and problem-solving skills have assisted me in my growth, my enthusiasm and positive attitude has granted me long lasting interpersonal relationships with those I have worked with. I am looking for volunteer and work opportunities that will help me explore my passion of wanting to become a pediatrician and lending a helping hand in hopes that one day I will be able to touch and inspire the lives of our future generation!
Experience
In my professional journey, I've had the opportunity to engage in various roles, blending clinical and laboratory experiences. At BC Children’s Hospital, I worked as a Clinical Research Assistant under Dr. Tom McLaughlin and Dr. Jennifer Smitten, where I contributed to the Pediatric IV Outpatient Therapy (PIVOT) Program and PICC Opportunities for Kids (POKe) Program. Here, I analyzed patient data, developed REDCap databases, interacted with patients and families, and created educational materials for pediatric IV therapy. I also upheld patient confidentiality and conducted literature reviews through the OVID Medline database. Additionally, at Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital, I served as a Research Assistant, shadowing under Professor In Kyu Lee and Eun Jung Choi, focusing on drug discovery and development for diabetes and metabolic diseases. In the lab, I honed my skills in Western Blot, ELISA, Flow Cytometry Analysis, Sepsis, and Transfection, along with expertise in autoclaving, technical support, and maintenance. My experiences reflect a strong foundation in both clinical research and laboratory techniques, as well as effective communication and patient education abilities.
Education
I completed a Biology and Pharmacology co-op program at McMaster University. Throughout my studies, I focused on understanding the intricate workings of biological systems and the effects of pharmacological agents on these systems. My coursework included a range of subjects such as molecular biology, pharmacokinetics, and drug development. Engaging in the co-op program, I gained practical experience through work terms in various research and industry settings, where I applied my knowledge to real-world problems. Additionally, I participated in extracurricular activities related to my field, further enhancing my skills and understanding. My education at McMaster University has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of biology and pharmacology, preparing me for roles in both research and clinical settings.
