About Shirin Dolatabadi:
I am a Ph.D. candidate in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Toronto, specializing in control systems, flight dynamics, aircraft performance and system design for aircrafts. I hold both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, where I gained a strong foundation in flight dynamics, control theory, and system modeling. Throughout my studies, I completed courses in aircraft design, aircraft performance, and fleet management, equipping me with a comprehensive understanding of aerospace systems and optimization.
I also took courses in fluid dynamics (CFD), load analysis (Finite Element Method), and design tools such as AutoCAD and Maya, which enhanced my ability to analyze aerodynamic performance and structural integrity. Additionally, I studied technology management and system dynamics, providing me with a broader perspective on complex engineering projects. I completed a reliability analysis course, where I developed a stochastic approach to failure probability calculations using Rt software. Furthermore, my exposure to heuristic optimization algorithms has strengthened my problem-solving skills in complex aerospace applications.
My doctoral research focuses on precision control of a firefighting drone, where I have designed LPV controllers to ensure stability under varying payload conditions. I have extensive experience in H-infinity control, LPV systems, and robust landing controllers for UAVs, combining theoretical research with hands-on experimentation and flight tests.
Beyond control design, I have worked in system engineering and aerospace design, contributing to aircraft performance modeling, bizjet design optimization, and regulatory compliance assessments. My expertise extends to multi-phase trajectory optimization for formation flight, where I applied direct collocation methods and developed optimization frameworks in MATLAB and GPOPS.
I also have a strong foundation in programming (MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C++), system dynamics modeling, and flight dynamics simulation. As a teaching assistant for multiple aerospace courses, I have honed my ability to communicate complex technical concepts.
