Tania Lyons

Specializing in records acquisition at one of Canada’s leading Personal Injury Law firms, I’ve amassed over 3 years of experience in the Records and Information Management field. I’m passionate about supporting my organization by efficiently processing records retrieval requests and ensuring that all team members have the records they need to perform their duties as quickly as possible. I’ve accomplished this by expertly obtaining requested records from external record custodians and quickly processing incoming records, applying metadata tags to records in a highly searchable manner, and maintaining record repositories according to established procedures such that records are easily retrieved and accessible to the rest of the organization upon request. My colleagues have referred to me as an empathetic, detail-oriented, hard-working individual who is driven by a desire to improve records management processes and get information into the hands of those who need it. 

When I’m not fulfilling records requests, I am creating illustrations for my freelance business. Since 2018, I have been creating marketable narrative illustrations for areas such as children’s literature, fashion, advertising, editorial, and more. I am passionate about applying my mastery of the digital watercolor medium and of detailed line work to create compelling, story-driven illustrations.  

Over the past 3 years, I have worked as a Records and Information Analyst at Litco Law. As the first hire of a newly formed Records and Information department in June 2019, I was a key member in establishing systems for obtaining records from external record custodians for our personal injury litigation files. Further, I helped establish systems for managing incoming records to classify, tag, process, store, and retrieve in our electronic case management system.  In addition to processing internal records requests and processing incoming information, my duties also involved liaising with external record providers (AHS, doctor's offices, insurance providers, government, employers, etc.) to acquire client records to support Legal Assistants and Client Care Specialists in litigation. To ensure team members had all relevant information for their files as quickly as possible, I regularly followed up with external providers by phone and email on outstanding records requests and provided updates to keep our team in the loop. To help obtain external records more quickly, I also assisted our accounting department with accounts payable duties by processing outgoing payments to external record providers. 

I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Geology (First Class Honors) after having completed an honors undergraduate thesis in the Applications of UAV-SfM in Mapping Stratigraphic Architecture of Late Cretaceous Meander-Belt Deposits, Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta, Canada in 2018. Although I do not hold a degree in a related field, I have been proactive in developing my records and information management skills by reading textbooks such as “Records and Information Management: Fundamental of Professional Practice” by William Saffady and am currently looking into obtaining a formal Records and Information Management certificate.
