Wenhui Bao

I am currently a 4th-year student at the University of British Columbia with a combined major in Economics and Statistics. Through my combined majors, I have developed a strong understanding of economic concepts and econometric models in data analysis and performance evaluations. I have had various internship and research assistant positions, which have taught me how to communicate effectively as part of a team and greatly enhanced my attention to detail when delivering work products. I have also participated in several club activities internationally and developed a global mindset. 

I have been working as an undergraduate research assistant for Professor Hiroyuki Kasahara at UBC since 2022 summer to investigate bilateral global maritime trade flows during COVID-19. I usually extract essential information from papers for inspiration. I drew on a fixed effect regression model to estimate the seaborne ratios based on commodity levels, then I modified and transformed it into my own model. In addition, I am continually self-learning coding and providing data reports in weekly presentations. I once visualized monthly changes in marine trade volumes for each commodity class across 2019 and 2020, presented the model with the highest explanatory power, and showed the respective estimation accuracies through two-way plots of testing and training samples. As a member of the project team, I am also active in discussions for collective advice. I would modify my work promptly after consultation with teammates and the professor. In the future, our team will be linking maritime trade flows with resulting CO2 emissions with the eventual aim of forecasting to provide advice for environmental policies. I believe my cherished experience in both R code studying and econometric model application skills can facilitate further studies in estimation models in MFRE.

During my internship at the asset management department of SIMIC holdings Co.LTD, I mainly calculated debits and credits to assess the financial performance of each individual investee and organized these data into spreadsheets. I also conducted case analysis by reading available files to state the reasons behind gains and losses. I was fond of weekly presentations since they provided opportunities to showcase my contributions, and I wholeheartedly enjoyed the collective atmosphere through frequent communications with my mentors to modify my work as soon as possible and to learn investment knowledge that was not taught in school. Therefore, I felt that SIMIC is like a family to me and I am strongly willing to further my studies in financial performance analysis to provide professional data-driven recommendations and reports for the business I am working for.
