    Position Summary:


For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia's leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.

The Information Technology Specialist is responsible for researching and developing innovative approaches to the Centre's IT goals.

The Specialist will address end-user systems to ensure they meet the required hardware and software for the Discovery Centre team and its programs and services, work with the team to plan database systems updating, and manage the Microsoft cloud service (adding new features, preparing documentation on how to implement, and working with the team to identify needs so that the organization can use this service to its maximum capacity).

The student will be engaged in all aspects of the IT within the Centre.

This will provide the student with an understanding of the requirements to operate an organization with a limited budget, how to identify priorities for improvements to systems, communication skills, team collaboration, leadership skills, researching and planning major projects, decision making and presenting.


Description of Tasks:

The Information Technology Specialist works in the Human Resources department and reports to the Director of Human Resources.

The primary tasks of the position are:

  • Completing systems review based on efficiencies, reducing duplication of information, and creating user friendly methods to maintain and improve systems
  • Working with the manager in approaching systems concerns, researching opportunities to make changes, and identifying ways to meet current and evolving needs of the team within the Centre and the virtual environment
  • Maintaining and installing updates/OS for systems (researching best practices), configuring, and supporting the server, staff computers, phones, POS systems, and printers
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:


Education:
Post-secondary education in computer science or a related discipline


Experience:
One year experience preferred


Language Requirements:
Fluency in English required; additional languages an asset

Other Qualifications:

Eligibility:

Applicants must be current students returning to post-secondary studies in Fall 2024 and must qualify for the Nova Scotia Co-operative Education Incentive or the Student Work Placement Program in order to be considered.


Measurable Outcomes:


The Information Technology Specialist will:

  • Complete a systems review to identify areas of improvement and make recommendations for changes to systems to increase effectiveness and efficiency
  • Troubleshoot and resolve user issues promptly and research the best methods for solving problems
  • Update systems to meet the hardware and software needs of the Centre
