Heidelberg Materials is seeking a 4 or 8 month term Environment Coordinator Co-Op Student for our Sustainable Resource Development group in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This role will support all Lehigh Hanson business lines, including aggregates, ready mix concrete, hot mix asphalt, and cement.

The key responsibility for this position is to assist the Environment Manager in maintaining operational compliance throughout all operations in British Columbia.


  • Assisting in maintaining compliance at RMC, HMA, CEM, AGG sites, including conducting and documenting inspections, identifying issues and solutions, and driving corrective actions to completion.
  • Participating in formal internal and external environmental audits to determine compliance under various Provincial and Federal regulations.
  • Assisting in collecting of effluent and waste samples from sites in compliance with permit and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintaining and submitting data records for compliance reporting including: Metro Vancouver wastewater permits, Port of Vancouver Non-Road Diesel Emissions, National Pollutant Release Inventory, etc.
  • Generating and submitting annual operations and reclamation reports under the Mines Act.
  • Tracking and compiling operational data for internal company reporting.
  • Assisting the Environment Manager with project specific tasks such as capital project permitting and environmental monitoring.
  • Assisting the Environment Manager with the Soil Acceptance Program for sites accepting material in British Columbia
  • Coordinating with sales and customers to receive appropriate documentation for review by Environmental Manager.
  • Interpreting laboratory analysis and environmental site assessment documents to determine regulatory compliance of imported materials.
  • Assisting Environment Manager in development and implementation of environmental policies, goals, and standards.
  • Developing training materials and workshops for operations and sales personnel as directed by the Environment Manager.

Education & Essential Experience

  • 3 rd or 4 th year of Bachelor of Science or Engineering in fields such as Earth and Environmental Science, Sustainability, Natural Resource Conservation, Resource Management, Environmental and Civil Engineering.
  • Must have strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Must have excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have personal vehicle and ability to travel across Central, SW BC, and Vancouver Island.
