  • Overview:
  • The Asphalt Cement Operations Manager supports commercial excellence and operational performance for the Greater Vancouver Asphalt Cement market. The successful incumbent will improve operational performance by providing daily operational support to the asphalt and salt operations to achieve all targets, budgets, objectives and goals. The Operations Manager supports the business' commercial objectives through focusing on high quality customer service.
  • The incumbent must be strategically focused team builder, and demonstrate a strong financial understanding. The successful incumbent will effectively operate in a changing environment, be detail oriented, and have strong organizational skills. This individual must have good written and verbal communication skills and team building skills with his/her peers and other employees. This individual must have experience managing in a union environment.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Reports to the General Manager of Lafarge Asphalt Technologies.
  • Works closely with Sales Representative, QC Manager, Logistics, Administrator and Finance Manager.
  • Work cooperatively with all Greater Coqutilam personnel, Regional Technical Service, and Corporate Business Performance. Reporting directly to this position are the Terminal Manager and Logistics.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Safety:
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environments and areas;
  • Reinforce the Lafarge safety standards and ensure 100% compliance at all sites;
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety through proactive employee engagement in daily operational tasks.

Operational Performance:

  • Support operations personnel to obtain superior production processes, maintenance and maximum utilization of equipment and personnel;
  • Responsible for the collecting, compiling, and entering of production volumes and data;
  • Work closely with Asphalt team and Performance Group on KPI tracking and product line benchmarking;
  • Provide support to the QC team to ensure delivery of the highest quality products;
  • Oversight of the maintenance budget to ensure maximum operating efficiency at the lowest cost of production;
  • Work closely with the internal supply team for aggregates and asphalt cement to optimize stock levels through the year.
  • Customer Excellence:
  • Understand customers product and business requirements, and establish effective relationships
  • based on quality products, services and convenience;
  • Work with the operational teams to deliver the highest level of customer service
  • Pursue status as low cost supplier

Budgets & Reporting:

  • Assist in the development of all budgets, targets, strategies and objectives and work towards the same;
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly production activity reports and provide accurate month end production data required for financial statements;
  • Prepare required reports in a concise and timely manner
  • Salary : $105, $ 115,000.00 per annum
  • Education and Work Experience:
  • University degree (and P.Eng status) plus 10-15 years of related experience in plant operations, rail, trucking;
  • Relevant combination of education and experience in plant operations, operational management in the construction industry, will be considered;
  • Experience communicating with and negotiating with union representatives is an asset;
  • Experience with moving commodities through ports, dealing with ships, barges, and tugboats is also an asset.
