The opportunity:


As a uniformed member of the Security Services Team, Security Guards ensure that the campus community has a wide range of professional proactive and reactive security services which include: crime prevention and strategies, conflict resolution, problem solving, investigational assistance, emergency security or medical response, crisis intervention and enforcement of university regulations and other statutes.

Security Guards work rotating shifts.


Security Guards will work under close supervision during their initial probationary period and are expected to gain experience and undertake training in areas such as interpersonal relations, leadership, mediation, communication, and investigation techniques.

Experienced Security Guards are expected to independently demonstrate good judgement and exercise professional discretion in all matters pertaining to the safety and security of the campus.

Experienced Security Guards are also expected to develop instructional skills in order to provide training to Security Guards and to conduct campus workshops on safety and security topics.


The qualifications and experience we're looking for:

  • University Degree, College Diploma, or equivalent combination of training, education, and/or experience.
  • Experience with computer systems.
  • 12 months related security experience, and/or; Experience/proficiency with various computer and electronic systems related to life safety, security and reporting (eg. Incident management software, handheld radios, etc).
  • Ability to work harmoniously within a team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve, think critically and multitask in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to complete written reports within multiple electronic reporting systems to a high standard.
  • Ability to operate proficiently multiple electronic systems, including but not limited to radios, handheld devices, CCTV, emergency warning systems and/or other emergency related equipment.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy in dealing with the culturally diverse University community under a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to independently demonstrate good judgement, initiative and professional discretion with matters pertaining to security, law and policy.
  • Highly motivated, selfstarter, willing to build professional skills through training and experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Manitoba Security Guard License.
  • Eligible to qualify as a Peace Officer or Institutional Safety Officer status in the Province of Manitoba.
  • Have and maintain a Manitoba Driver's License with at least a Class 5F driver's license.
  • Have and maintain training in Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR.
  • Have and maintain a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector record.
  • Demonstrate proficiency, qualify and maintain a qualification in deescalation, use of force and defensive techniques. This includes nonviolent crisis intervention and use of a defensive baton.
  • Will be required to work regular day and night rotating 12hour shifts (including weekdays, weekends and holidays).
  • Physically capable of performing the duties while carrying patrol equipment, (i.e. ability to bend, stoop, stretch, climb several flights of stairs and carry out patrols and emergency response on foot, bicycle or vehicle as required).
  • Physically capable of performing duties both inside and outside considering a variety of weather conditions and/or environments.
  • Demonstrate physical proficiency, qualify and maintain a qualification in use of force and defensive techniques. This includes the use of a defensive baton.
