Facility Services is looking for a Glass/Floor Installer to join their team

The Glass/Floor Installer is responsible for the glass and resilient floor replacement program in Division schools and buildings.

The main purpose of this job is to repair and install glass and flooring to support renovations, maintenance, repairs and new construction.

The work performed is of moderate complexity and assignments will vary considerably depending on the unit served. The duties are completed with mínimal supervision.

Work may involve procedures of a technical nature and some jobs in this class may entail supervisory responsibility. Where supervision is required, the job must achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments and explaining procedures.

Responsibilities require experience in glass cutting, floor laying and installation along with some knowledge in carpentry. The work requires the use of a variety of hand and power tools.


Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by related industry, construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department.

Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division's goals and objectives.

There is considerable discretion exercised by this job in the performance of its regular duties.


JOB RESPONSIBILITES
Performs repairs, maintenance, renovations and some manufacturing

  • Remove broken glass and install replacements for single, double, triple glazing and sealed units as required in windows, doors, sidelights, borrowed lights, view panels and other miscellaneous areas
  • Repair, install or replace mirrors as required
  • Cut and transport glass/mirror for installation
  • Repair, install or replace resilient flooring (i.e. linoleum, vinyl tiles on floors/walls) using appropriate procedures to ensure effective use of materials and high performance of finished product
  • Ensure the repair and/or removal of vinyl asbestos sheet goods, or any product containing asbestos, is performed by the Hazardous Materials Specialist or a licensed asbestos removal and abatement professional
  • Repair, install and replace carpeting measure, cut and install underlay and carpeting using hand or machine stitcher, seaming iron, bonding tape or other bonding materials
  • Stretch carpeting using kneekicker or power stretcher and secure carpeting using staple gun or other devices
  • May be required to install hardwood floors, such as strip floors, block floors or plank floors, using glue, staples, nails or other means
  • Order and install window blinds and coverings
  • Repair or build window screens
  • Order and install showcase glass
  • Keep time and material records for internal and external work projects
  • Estimate supplies, materials and time requirements for work projects
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide coveroff during absences
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Maintenance of worksite

  • Assist in the cleanup of worksites
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards
  • Estimate materials required, monitor use and keep time and materials records
Building site security

  • Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

_ High School plus a current related Alberta Journeyman Certificate e.g. Floor Layer, Carpentry_

  • Several years of experience in glass cutting, floor laying and installation along with some knowledge in carpentry
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry acquired through trades related training or experience
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials
  • Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD) is required
  • Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Word, Outlook and the Internet is required; knowledge
