We are looking for a Manager, System Control Centre to join our team.

The System Control Centre is the brain behind moving energy from generation and transmission through the distribution system where it is needed.

The Manager is responsible for leading a large, 24/7, unionized operations team to ensure the safe and effective delivery of the EPC electrical grid by ensuring compliance with all applicable procedures, systems and training.


The electricity industry is accelerating changes to meet the challenges of significant load growth and diversified renewable power sources across the grid.

The Manager, System Control Centre is critical for positioning the team to meet the expectations of growth over the coming energy transformation by using new processes and tools to manage the changes as a foundation for modern capabilities that will grow with customer and business needs.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead a strong team of employees, including being a chance leader, focused on a safe and inclusive work environment.
  • Ensure team is adequately staffed to meet a 24/7/365 operation requirement.
  • Retention and development of a high functioning team with exceptional culture and commitment to safety above all else are key accountabilities.
  • Work closely with the Field Services, System Operations and Asset Performance teams to ensure a close and effective working relationship with the System Control Centre.
  • Act as a System Operations voting member on ENMAX Safety Council.
  • Responsible for overseeing a large operating budget within the System Control Centre as well as project support.
  • Accountable for training and support of System Control Operators in their duties. Ensure Control operators maintain NERC certification compliance and complete all required training.
  • Accountable for the facilitation of the System Control Operator training program including new operator training and ongoing operator training and qualification programs.
  • Accountable for maintaining compliance with Alberta Reliability Standards as applicable to the System Control Centre.
  • Develop, implement and review System Control Centre processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and ensure mitigation of risks.
  • Ensure the delivery of optimal results against key performance metrics that are Established, monitored, measured and reported through monthly and annual performance reporting.
  • Establish initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure productivity, quality, reliability, and safety functions for Control Operations.

Education Required:

  • Professional Engineer, PLT or PSE considered an asset.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 10 years of Utility Industry experience with strong technical knowledge in electrical utility systems operation & control and associated employees in this functional area. Proficient in transmission, distribution and network systems management and design Knowledgeable in stateoftheart systems applicable to system control i.e. outage management, distribution management, smart grid, Advanced Distribution Management System, Energy Management System, Distributed Energy Resource Management System etc. Knowledgeable of transmission, distribution and network system assets Sound knowledge in high voltage standards, Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Alberta Electric Utility Code. Incident Command System trained through 300 considered an asset

  • Mission critical role requires a high degree of organizational awareness where understanding organization structures and areas of accountability is key.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of leadership within the organization and able to clearly articulate what issues and risks are in the event of a system interruption.
  • Ability to define, recommend, and make decisions with excellent judgement in near realtime to ensure safe and effective control of the electrical system.
  • Managing in a collectively bargained unit and familiar with the agreements that support this.
  • Lead a team of shift workers to complete work and projects to ensure they are done in an effective, efficient and safe manner
  • Ability to influence external stakeholders including the Alberta Electrical System Operator (AESO), Electricity Canada, and other industry working groups
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to interface with all levels in the organization
