STUDENT SUCCESS NAVIGATOR
***The Student Success Navigator will contribute to the overall success of Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute by working with the Student Success strategy offering a range of student support services to Oshki-Wenjack students in coordination with Program Coordinators, Faculty, College Partners and others as required. Under the direction of the Student Success Director, the Student Success Navigator's primary focus is to provide support to Oshki-Wenjack students so they may successfully complete their course requirements that will lead to their graduation and employment.


KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate Student Success Initiatives that include the: Student Orientation and Transition program for each new cohort; EldersonCampus Program for student retention and success; Faculty tutoring; Peer tutoring.
  • Assist students to access supports through different agencies as required.
  • Provide advocacy services for students as may be required for their retention and success.
  • Prepare letters of support for students' needs as may be required.
  • Maintain student confidentiality at all times.
  • Provide logístical support to the students registered in Oshki-Wenjack programs.
  • Provide personal support and referral to students who require professional support registered in Oshki-Wenjack programs.
  • Attend Faculty meetings and work closely with the Academics team to identify student success requirements.
  • Work closely with the Student Success Director to identify student retention and success requirements.
  • Provide assistance as required for student retention and success.
  • Revise and update the Student Handbook each year in consultation with the staff.
  • Liaise with employers, college partners, funders and Nishnawbe Aski Nation community leaders and educators.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops or reviews related to Oshki-Wenjack programs.
  • Participate in program promotion and student recruitment activities.
  • Travel to training locations and supervise and mentor students for the duration of their apprenticeship training and work placement.
  • Assist students with searching and securing placements/employment and provide support in the process.
  • Perform client/case management using the Accountability and Resource Management System.
  • Travel to Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities to provide student support for success, program promotion and student recruitment and other meetings as may be required.
  • Submit reports to supervisor, as requested

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Take personal responsibility to increase sensitivity, awareness and implementation of Oshki-Wenjack's cultural teachings and organizational practices in both professional conduct and workrelated deliverables.
  • Access and utilize Elders and Knowledge holders for teachings and guidance as it relates to work deliverables.
  • Work from a traumainformed perspective, utilizing the teachings of the medicine wheel and Seven Grandfather teachings.
  • Be prepared to work in conjunction with the philosophy and mandate of the Institute.
  • Adhere to the Policies and Procedures as set by the Institute.
  • Representation on committees as required for the enhancement and benefits of Oshki-Wenjack's overall operations and programs.
  • Always maintain professionalism.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and positive relationship building.
  • Regular attendance and conduct at work according to the requirements of Oshki-Wenjack's Policies and Procedures.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Trades and Innovation Manager, or designate, commensurate with role.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Personal responsibility has been taken to increase sensitivity and awareness of the NAN communities and Indigenous culture.
  • Ability to implement the program promotion activities and recruitment strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with community members to recruit and retain students
  • Ability to secure student placements between the student and employer
  • Ability to meet deadlines and submit reports in a timely manner

RELATIONSHIP OF INDICATORS TO PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEW PLAN
This position descriptions operates in conjunction with and forms part of the annual review/evaluation and career development process.

An initial review will take place during the probationary period following commencement of employment with Student Success Director and then annually with Student Success Director.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A diploma or degree in a related field (eg Student Support Services);
  • A minimum of three years of related experience; Equivalencies may be considered.
  • 35 years of experience working in an Indigenous organization with a focus on northern communities.

Preferred

  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.
  • Prior knowledge and experience working an Education rel
