Description

Battery Chemist, AlumaPower Corporation

Do you want to be part of a revolutionary new company developing products based on a patented technology that can reduce society's reliance on fossil fuels by creating a new kind of clean fuel?

AlumaPower's breakthrough technology re-invents the aluminum-air battery as a 'galvanic engine' - an innovative long-life energy source that runs on recycled aluminum as a fuel.

It produces only water vapour and heat as emitted by-products, while providing at least 4 times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

AlumaPower's patented technology will introduce recycled, or 'clean' aluminum, as a fuel source displacing hydrocarbons and complementing other battery solutions such as lithium-ion.

You will have experience as a Battery Chemist, you will be familiar with researching scientific and technical publications relevant to battery chemistry focused on Metal-air batteries.

You will analyze internal battery test data by using available data parsing and characterization tools and provide test plans to investigate findings.

You will provide verbal and written recommendations on the discharging algorithm and battery chemistry adjustments to our R&D team.

You may also work with other members of the AlumaPower team, specifically with mechanical, electrical, and software control elements, to develop a complete system architecture that meets customers needs and may involve the development of new Intellectual Property.

You will need to be able to write up reports on your work, when and where required, and submit these to the team for inclusion in an overall detailed progress report.

You may also be required to assist in finding suppliers and potentially assisting in the development of grant/research funding proposals.

Above all, you will be wishing to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment and have a hunger to grow personally within the company.

If this sounds like you, then you'll have the following attributes, experience, and skills:

  • Facility set-up and operation
  • Develop and carry out chemical procedures for electrolyte and electrodes optimization
  • Design test procedures, train test engineers, and oversee testing process cell and system testing and installation.
  • Specify, select, source, and install laboratory instruments and equipment associated with testing.
  • Optimize laboratory layout, establish lab hygiene procedure, and maintenance processes to maximize test uptime of prototype cells as new generations of cells come through the lab.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and lab consumables and reorder thresholds.

Prototype testing, data and root cause analysis and documentation.

  • Participate in the assembling of battery test cells and integration of discharge regime, as defined by the Engineering Team.
  • Identify root cause of malfunctions and early warning signs of impending malfunction.
  • Design tests to resolve the root cause for different battery failure modes and evaluate compliance to industry standards.
  • Create test procedures and operation manuals based on R&D findings.
  • Prepare and maintain lab test reports, tracking results against parts configuration.

Continuous Improvement

  • Explore and develop chemical solutions for solving problems that may occur in the integration and operation of the cell systems.
  • Design and manage all raw data collection, test reports, document version administration and version control for prototype cells building a record keeping process that will take the company through field testing and into production scale.
  • Develop mass/energy balance and power/energy performance models.
  • Provide timely updates to R&D leader identifying project risks & issues. Proactively propose solutions and swiftly implement new strategies, initiatives, and measures as requested.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Chemistry.
  • PhD will be considered an asset.
  • At least 2 years of battery related experience working in a collaborative R&D team environment.
  • Handson experience with tools, laboratory apparatus, and analytical equipment.
  • Proficiency in the principles and techniques for a range of methods in chemical and materials characterization (e.g., ICP, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, XPS, FTIR, GC/MS, CV, ICPMS).
  • Experience working in R&D and product development environments.
  • Strong oral and written English.
  • Passion for providing high quality service to internal stakeholders.
  • Strive for continuous improvement and personal growth.
  • Able to multitask and perform under tight deadlines.
