Our Forensic Toxicology Department in Edmonton, Alberta has an opening for a Positive Certifying Scientist Responsible for verifying the chain of custody and scientific reliability of any test result by reviewing, approving and accurately reporting screening and confirmatory results for negative and non-negative specimens.

Ensuring equipment and assay calibration, quality controls and analytical procedures are followed in accordance with SOP. Review and verify the acceptability of chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS, LC/MS/MS) results. Ensure all quality control checks and standards are run as required.

Must be able to take charge of the HHS-certified laboratory operation in the event of a temporary absent of the RP and Alt-RP for 14 calendar days or less due to vacation, illness or business trip.

Participate in all quality assurance programs and adhere to company and external regulatory bodies guidelines.


This is a permanent full-time role working in a rotational shift onsite - Monday to Saturday between 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

How YOU will make a difference:
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all documents, records and results from unauthorized access.
  • Meet high level of customer service in terms of quality of results and TAT
  • Must be able to certify and report all negative and nonnegative results Review equipment and assay calibration, quality control, chain of custody and test results of immunoassay screening and validity testing for acceptability and ensure compliance with SOP.
  • Review equipment and assay calibration, quality control and test results of confirmatory testing for acceptability and ensure compliance with SOP.
  • Review Custody and Control Forms for accuracy and compliance.
  • Record, approve or reject test results according to established procedures in a timely manner
  • Review quality control charts for initial and confirmatory testing and investigate any nonconformance, and ensure remedial actions are implemented
  • Verify the accuracy of data and information on all documents.
  • Ensure specimen identification is correct and maintained throughout the testing process.
  • Review and approve quality control material verification, ensure proper filling of all documents and data.
  • Proficient with the latest regulatory requirements such as the NLCP/SAMHSA, CAP and ISO 1702
  • Prepare Litigation packages and testimony in court.
  • Scientific and lead resource to accessioning, screening, extraction and confirmation (GC/MS, LC/MS/MS).
  • Maintain a current toxicology knowledge base to include drug metabolism, distribution and elimination, factors affecting drug distribution and current advances in analytical toxicology.
  • Consult with the Responsible Person (RP) to assist with nonroutine problems and concerns
  • Ensure all communications and inquiries from or to the MRO and clients are handled in a courteous and professional manner, and all communications must be documented.
  • Participate in external proficiency testing programs (PT)
  • Participate in staff training as outlined in department procedure manuals
  • Must be able to perform the duties of a Certifying Technician

What YOU bring to the role:

  • Minimum B.Sc degree in a relevant field
  • 2 years of relevant experience required
  • Experience working in Toxicology considered an asset
  • Competent with drug screening and confirmatory techniques such as Immunoassays, GC/MS and LC/MS/MS in terms of theory and practice, and serves as scientific resource.
  • Follows established SOP's and provide input into problem solving and methods development.
  • Detailed understanding of the role of quality assurance and its impact on the quality and integrity of results.
  • Meeting expected customer service levels in terms of quality of results and TAT.
