    The Athletic Therapist will provide support for the Head Athletic Therapist in assisting with the coordination and daily operation of the College's Sports Injury Clinic facility, the delivery of clinical and on-field Athletic Therapy services, care and treatment to UCC's athlete and student population and providing athletic game and event coverages. The Athletic Therapist will also assist with the supervision and mentoring of (athletic therapy) student therapists in both clinical and on-field settings.

    Key Responsibilities and Tasks

    General Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Athletic Therapist in managing all aspects of the College's Athletic Therapy program, including the planning, organization, coordination and delivery of Athletic Therapy services (clinical and on-field) to UCC athletes/students - including injury prevention, orthopedic assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and concussion injuries;
  • Assist with overseeing daily operations of the Sports Injury Clinic;
  • Supervision of athletic therapy student therapists (in clinical and field settings);
  • Reports to the Head Athletic Therapist and corresponds with Coaches, Health Center staff and Athletic Director on a regular basis;
  • Correspond regularly with and keep Head Athletic Therapist and Coaches informed regarding player injuries (musculoskeletal and concussions), recovery progress and playing status;
  • Communicate effectively during emergencies with relevant staff (ie: Security, CIRT), coaches, medical professionals (ie:EMS) and parents (as needed).
  • On-site Coverage:

  • Provide 'on-site' immediate and appropriate emergency care during UCC home; games/tournaments/athletic events (for Upper and Prep schools) - be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends (as required);
  • 'On-site' coverage of practices (first-aid and immediate care of acute injuries and concussions);
  • 'Side-line' game coverages for high-risk contact sports (ie: football, hockey, lacrosse, rugby) - providing initial on-field emergency care for acute injuries, including concussions;
  • Pre-game taping and post-game injury care;
  • First-aid and emergency care for all UCC students (and visiting school teams/athletes);
  • Clinical Therapy Services - Injury Prevention, Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation:

  • Provide clinical care and treatment for UCC athletes/students;
  • Injury assessment, recognition, treatment and management of musculoskeletal injuries and concussions;
  • Conduct thorough assessments and evaluations of sports-related injuries (to help determine the nature and severity of the injury);
  • Design and implement individualized treatment plans/rehab programs for injured athletes/students;
  • Establish a course of rehab and carry out treatment programs with the aid of various therapeutic and exercise techniques, including therapeutic modality use (such as Ultrasound, Interferential Current, Muscle Stim, TENS, thermotherapy, cryotherapy);
  • Provide pre-practice/game taping and post-practice/game injury care;
  • Advise on referrals to appropriate external healthcare providers for further medical evaluation, diagnosis and care/treatment options (as needed).
  • On-field/SIdeline Treatment and Care - Athletic event coverages:

  • Provide 'on-field coverage' for high-impact contact sports 'Home' games/tournaments - for football, soccer (fall term); - for lacrosse, rugby (spring term); and 'in-rink coverage' - for hockey (Upper and Prep teams; winter term);
  • Provide initial on-field first-aid, immediate/emergency care and management of acute injuries, including concussions;
  • Provide sideline concussion assessment (SCAT test) on players suspected of sustaining/suffering a concussion in the game;
  • Assist with supervision of AT student therapists in the field setting.
  • Travel with High-Risk Contact Sports:

  • Accompany high-risk contact sport teams (football, hockey, lacrosse, rugby) during travel to away games and tournaments
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally as needed (*frequent travel, single and/or multiple day travel)
  • Administrative Duties and Record-keeping Maintenance:

  • Maintain proper, legible/clear and accurate documentation of injuries sustained (musculoskeletal and concussions), assessments, treatments and progress in a timely manner;
  • Assist with scheduling of clinic appointments and athletic event coverages;
  • Assist with reviewing athlete medical info (ie: anaphylaxis/allergies, asthma, etc.);
  • Coordinate referrals to external healthcare providers (when necessary) for further medical assessment/diagnosis and treatment options;
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment;
  • Assist with inventory, ordering and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • AT Student Therapist Placements:

  • Assist the Head AT with student therapist placement recruitment (ie: interviewing process)
  • Provide clinical and on-field supervision, practical instruction, education, delegation and assist with the evaluation of 'athletic therapy student therapists'
  • Job Requirements

    Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Undergraduate Bachelor's Degree (or Diploma) in Athletic Therapy from an accredited Athletic Therapy program;
  • Certified Athletic Therapist CAT(C) in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association (CATA);
  • Valid CPR/AED-BLS (Basic Life Support) and First Responder certifications;
  • Minimum of 3 yrs. experience in the field of Athletic Therapy, preferably within both clinical and field settings (with familiarity working with high-risk contact sport teams, such as football, hockey, lacrosse and rugby);
  • Hockey Canada Trainer Certificate highly recommended;
  • Ability to work in both clinical and field settings (including with high-risk contact sports);
  • Strong injury assessment and treatment skills, knowledge of rehabilitation techniques, therapeutic modality application;
  • Experience with concussion (SCAT) assessments and management, including return-to-play management;
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Documentation and maintenance of up-to-date patient records;
  • Must be flexible with scheduling, as work hours are determined by athletic program needs/schedules - including evenings, weekends, and single to multiple day team travel;
  • Assist with the supervision, mentoring, instruction, motivation and evaluation of AT student therapists;
  • Stay current with new knowledge, trends and practices for providing appropriate services in medical assessments, treatments, rehabilitation and other applicable areas within the scope of professional practice (including referral to appropriate health care providers for further medical evaluation/care as needed);
  • Maintain professional certifications required by relevant regulatory bodies.
