Intergenerational Trauma Counsellor
The Native Women's Shelter of Montreal (NWSM) is seeking an Intergenerational Trauma
Counsellor for Miyoskamin, an innovative centre and second-stage housing complex that provides comprehensive health care, social services, and access to justice for Indigenous women, youth, and families.
Miyoskamin is a Cree word meaning "spring" or "ground-breaking", which reflects the truly meaningful impact. La Maison Miyoskamin will take a holistic approach to health and well-being by pairing affordable housing with the Saralikitaaq Community SocialPediatric Centre.
When doors open in the Springtime of 2023, Miyoskamin will help to ensure that families remain united and are equipped mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually to build an autonomous future.

Intergenerational Trauma Counsellor
TYPE OF POSITION:
Full Time (potential evenings & weekends as needed)

SALARY:
$70,000-$80,000/yr (commensurate with experience)
START DATE:
February 2024
PROBATION:
Three (3) month probation period, after which an evaluation will be conducted.

POSITION TITLE:
Intergenerational Trauma Counsellor
The Intergenerational Trauma Counsellor is responsible for supporting residents of
Miyoskamin and families accessing services at Saralikitaaq. Through healing circles, ceremony and individual support, the Intergenerational Trauma Counsellor seeks to ground, balance and support community members.
This position has been created to address the continued impacts of intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous people and to move forward in healing, towards an autonomous future.
Duties and Responsibilities
‒ Receiving referrals and following up with residents of Miyoskamin as well as children and families accessing services through Saralikitaaq;
‒ Working with residents, children and families to create a healing plan that places their needs and interests at the center;
‒ Meeting regularly with residents, children and families for individual counseling in support of their healing plan;
‒ Maintaining client files and reports;
‒ Attending interdisciplinary roundtable meetings at Saralikitaaq, as needed;
‒ Offering support to debrief with children and families following interdisciplinary roundtable meetings at Saralikitaaq;
‒ In collaboration with the assistant director and the coordinator of care, developing activities and programming to meet the needs of women and families;
‒ Leading healing circles and ceremonies;
‒ In collaboration with the empowerment worker and the family support worker, offering additional resources and referrals to residents and/or families, as needed;
‒ Responding to crisis situations and directing the provision of immediate support services;
‒ Other duties as required by the director.
Qualifications
1. Skills and qualities
‒ Empathetic and non judgemental;
‒ Strong active listening skills;
‒ Strong oral and written communication skills;
‒ Strong organizational skills.
2. Work experience
‒ At least 2 years experience in a supportive role in a community, social service or health setting;
‒ Experience in grief counseling (asset);
‒ Experience in another Indigenous organization (asset).
3. Specialized knowledge
‒ Knowledge of the historical and contemporary realities of urban Indigenous populations;
‒ Understanding of the effects of intergenerational trauma;
‒ Understanding of issues of displacement and homelessness that impact Indigenous populations;
‒ Understanding of the diversity of Indigenous communities inside and outside of
Quebec;
‒ Understanding of the importance of ceremony and healing - must have a network of Indigenous healers;
‒ Experience in traditional ceremonies and leading them (asset);
‒ Bilingualism in English and French;
‒ Knowledge of an Indigenous language (asset).

Education:
- Undergraduate degree in applied human sciences, social work, the humanities (a combination of education and experience may be considered).
