About the Organization

  • The Ocean Tracking Network (OTN, /) is a global marine and freshwater monitoring platform that focuses on tracking the movements of aquatic animals in the context of ocean conditions and climate change. Established in 2008, OTN is one of 19 National Research Facilities supported by the Major Science Initiatives (MSI) program of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

Job Summary

  • Reporting to the Database Manager, and under the guidance of the Director of Data Operations, the Database Analyst will play a lead role in expanding the OTN data system to accept satellite telemetry data. The Database Analyst is responsible for creating and maintaining data structures and data ingestion processes purposebuilt for satellite data. The Database Analyst serves as an ambassador for OTN and is expected to network and interface with partners around the globe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and extend OTN's database to accommodate new advances in satellite telemetry and other complementary data products.
  • Design, develop, and maintain OTN data quality procedures to assure accuracy, integrity, and security of the data. Tailor OTN procedures according to best practices for satellite data.
  • Design, generate, and automate the creation of OTN database products, including endproduct development from loaded data.
  • Lead and/or assist with workshop delivery and development to train network users, including node managers, students, and early career researchers.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in computer science, informatics, marine biology, oceanography, or related field with a minimum of 3 years' experience in data systems, data management, and information technology.
  • Strong familiarity with enterprise relational data systems (PostgreSQL preferred), with experience in database design and optimization of data systems.
  • Skilled with Linux administration and shell scripting.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or similar language, with direct experience with data manipulation and interaction with RDBs, data analysis, and data visualization techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience working with humangenerated data and performing quality control measures.
  • Ability to work in a deadlinedriven, highvolume environment, with high attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a collaborative team.

Assets

  • Experience in biology or biological data systems.
  • Experience with geospatial data.
  • Fluency in additional languages, such as French or Spanish.
