Position Purpose:

The Supervisor, Accounting ensures general accounting functions are performed in compliance with legislative guidelines and internal policies and procedures. This position oversees all accounting functions, process and enhancements as well as the development of policies and procedures. This position ensures the departmental objectives are met and provides financial recommendations to the Senior Management team.


Responsibilities:


  • Supervises all activities of the Accounting team including processing adjusting entries to general ledger, account reconciliations and analysis for bank, fixed assets, inventory, miscellaneous accounts receivable and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Supervises the timely and accurate completion of all costing activities including work order close, capital contribution transactions, customer invoicing and refunds.
  • Oversees month end processes including accruals, provisions, related party, lease and debt accounting.
  • Liaises with business managers and supervisors on accounting processes to ensure timely work order close and accurate costing.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable legislation, OEB guidelines, IFRS, federal and provincial filings, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Researches, recommends and develops accounting policies and procedures.
  • Initiates and implements process and systems changes/enhancements to increase the productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of department operations.
  • Maintains sound internal control practices and procedures within the functional areas
  • Plans, organizes and supervises daily activities of accounting staff.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance and advice.
  • Provides input into department goals and objectives.
  • Leads and/or participates in projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget.
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Specialized Knowledge:


  • Postsecondary education in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting
  • CMA/CGA/CA/CPA designation
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, including thorough knowledge of IFRS
  • Knowledge of and experience in regulated statutory reporting
  • Knowledge of relevant tax requirements, including HST and taxable benefits, laws, regulations and guidelines
  • Extensive working knowledge of Tier I ERP systems and other related reporting systems
  • Knowledge of the energy and utility industries, including an aboveaverage understanding of the regulatory environment and a fundamental knowledge of electrical distribution systems
  • Proficiency in documenting and interpreting policies and procedures

Experience:


  • Minimum of 5 years related experience, including supervision of staff
  • Experience in a senior accounting and financial capacity
  • Experience in developing and recommending corporate procedures, managing budgets and providing input to strategic/business plans
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment is an asset

Skills/Abilities/Competencies:


  • Ability to interpret financial results and communicate to both financial and nonfinancial management and staff
  • Serviceorientation and high degree of client focus with the ability to ensure cooperation from others while maintaining professional and respectful relationships at various levels of the organization
  • Strong ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams
  • Strong problemsolving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisely
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class "G" driver's license
