Summary:


The Family Preservation & Support Counsellor supports clients through providing brief home-based, multiple-component intervention designed to prevent child-out-of-home placement and reduce risk of child maltreatment through changing behaviours and increasing skills.

Services provided will be designed to strengthen and preserve families using flexible modes that are determined by family's strengths and needs.

Services are provided to families who are experiencing crisis or challenges that threaten family stability, child safety, or well-being.

Family Preservation & Support Counsellors are expected to utilize a crisis intervention approach where indicated, generally including crisis assessment, engagement, and relationship building, identification of major problems, dealing with emotional responses, generating and exploring alternatives, developing a plan, establishing agreement, and providing follow-up.

The goal of activities provided by the Family Preservation & Support Counsellor are to support and prompt a planned change in behaviour, condition, or functioning of clients.

Services may include therapeutic family violence interventions and services to assist with goals in family service plans.

The Family Preservation & Support Counsellor brings a strength-based approach to excellence in service delivery and reports to the Lead of Child and Family Counselling Team.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provides services according to the Schedule of Service for the Family Preservation/Family Support Programs.
  • Assesses personal, program, and client safety at all times and meets all work safe standards.
  • Adheres to program manual and to SCCSS policies including client confidentiality.
  • Creates a safe space for individual, family, and/or group counselling.
  • Conducts client assessments and develops treatment plans utilizing SMART goals and outcomes.
  • Considers risk factors and safety in all aspects of work with children, youth, and families.
  • Collaborates with parents, family members, or care providers as needed.
  • Builds rapport with clients, secures trust and confidence, and makes referrals to other community resources as appropriate.
  • Attends team meetings as scheduled and participates in group/clinical supervision discussions regarding case assignments and progress.
  • Gives and receives feedback openly and constructively with clients, coworkers, supervisors, and community partners.
  • Maintains communication with other agencies as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency working with Indigenous families and community.
  • Maintains client records and client files in keeping with program manual and SCCSS policy.
  • Collaborates with the Program Lead to develop and establish standards and accountability mechanisms including work plans, monitoring frameworks, and evaluation processes including the completion of program reports, stat collection, and maintenance of relevant documents.
  • Collaborates with other SCCSS programs to enrich program delivery and fulfill our mission more effectively.
  • Obtains and maintains awareness of the demographic and socioeconomic variables of the community and actively works to reduce barriers to services.
  • Ensures effective service delivery consistent with agency mandate, policy, meeting all legal, contractual, financial, and other compliance requirements.
  • Supports ongoing compliance with accreditation standards, new standards, and CARF requirements.
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of SCCSS including participating in organizational wide initiatives as interested or asked.
  • Stays current with SCCSS programs and services.
  • Assists the Lead of Child and Family Counselling in creating a learning environment for students and volunteers.
  • Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding with the efficient operation of the organization.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Graduate degree in social work or comparable human service field from an accredited institution with at least two years of experience in family and children's services; and/or a bachelor's degree in social work or another human ser
