Policy Analyst - Fisheries Act

Fixed-term for 2 years

Based in Ottawa, ON

Job Summary


The Policy Analyst - Fisheries Act, in reporting to the Senior Conservation Biologist - Freshwater Ecology, will support our Fisheries Act policy work with research on the policies and regulatory approach that DFO and ECCC use in connection with the implementation of the Fisheries Act.


Who We are Looking For:


  • Strong communication (written and oral) skills in English with demonstrated professional writing experience
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples
  • Knowledge of the Fisheries Act, including changes over time and strengths and weaknesses
  • Strong time management skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Passion for conservation and recovery of wildlife

Responsibilities:


  • Lead engagement with Indigenous partners on cumulative effects advocacy
  • Synthesize cumulative effects of small projects
  • Analyze outcomes of offsetting under the Fisheries Act
  • Review DFO compliance and enforcement activities
  • Evaluate how ECCC manages pollution prevention provisions under the Fisheries Act and ascertain strengths and weaknesses
  • Lead author on peerreviewed papers analyzing data on outcomes of Fisheries Act implementation
  • Obtaining records of projects reviewed by DFO and their outcomes
  • Conducting other related policy/research tasks as needed

Experience Needed

  • Postsecondary degree in environmental studies, biology, applied science, law or a combination thereof
  • Educational or employment experience in policy analysis, comparative policy reviews
  • Experience conducting literature reviews and managing large data sets
  • Experience writing professional papers, reports and critical analyses
  • Lead author on policy papers published in peerreviewed journals
