Position Description:

Super Science Club (SSC) is an award winning, innovative and exciting community outreach program.

As a free, after school club at underserved elementary schools in Vancouver, the program provides stimulating and interactive activities to help inspire children to have fun with science and develop critical thinking skills that lead to lifelong learning.

From January 2024 through June 2024, the Outreach Facilitators, SSC will represent Science World in the community by delivering after-school programs in schools across Vancouver.

Facilitators work together in teaching teams to ensure SSC students in grade 1-7 receive a high quality after-school experience that leaves them excited about science as a way of understanding the world.

Time Commitment:

This is an afternoon part-time position requiring 9 to 18 hours per week while school is in session (January -June
Each 4.5-hour shift is from 1:15pm-5:45pm and the program runs Monday to Thursday. Preference is given to those with availability for 2 or more afternoons/week.


_Note:
Super Science Club does not run during school holiday breaks/closures and no shifts will occur at these times (e.g. Spring Break and District Professional Development days). _


Responsibilities:


  • Provide a fun afterschool experience that will inspire students with memorable, handson, dynamic demonstrations
  • Present on preplanned science topics and facilitate activities for grade 17 students in a team of 23 people
  • Provide general classroom management (maintaining a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment)
  • Prepare, cleanup and restock all materials and resources required to deliver the program
  • Participate in a daily debrief with your team and document session feedback
  • Contribute collaboratively to the constant improvement of this important program and your own program delivery performance
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Qualifications:


  • Must be an engaged, responsive and respectful team player capable of working in a dynamic team environment
  • Must be organized, selfmotivated, flexible, and responsible
  • Must possess a keen interest in science and handson learning
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience working with the public; excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • A minimum of a High School graduation, some postsecondary education preferred
  • Availability for 2 or more days/week is preferred
  • Current first aid certificate with CPR-C and AED, or willingness to obtain one, is considered an asset
This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $19.47/hour.


After successfully completing probation, will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP/TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
