Under direct supervision of the Operations Manager, the Utilities Operator will primarily be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and monitoring the municipal water and wastewater system components to ensure optimum performance of the infrastructure and operations of the water supply, treatment and distribution systems, and wastewater treatment and collection.
Primary responsibilities -
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment System, including:
- Inspecting, maintaining and recording data of blowers and effluent pumps daily
- Inspecting, maintaining and recording data of the head works facility daily
- Maintaining effluent discharge within operating condition perimeters
- Coordinating and/or performing sampling, as required under the conditions of the Municipal Sewage Regulations
- Inspecting infiltration basins
- Inspecting sanitary manholes and sewer piping
- Assessing problems and organizing regular maintenance of the collection system
- Maintaining potable water provided to customers within operating condition perimeters
- Assisting in surface water management and projections
- Inspecting, maintaining and recording data of analyzing equipment, control valves, pressure filters, UVT reactors and treated water reservoirs daily
- Maintaining potable water provided to customers within operating condition perimeters
- Maintaining the potable water distribution system (valves, mains, services, sampling stations, etc.)
- Performing "A" & "B" inspections
- Making repairs to utility fire hydrants including unidirectional hydrant flushing, and winterizing hydrants and inspecting to meet the requirements of the BC Fire Code
- Inspecting and recording gas plant operation daily
- Setting up plant for the delivery of propane trucks, and recording data
- Assisting with responding to gas odor calls
Other miscellaneous duties, including:
- Assisting and providing information to customers and guests as required
- Ensuring all operations of the utility are performed in compliance with the various regulators and all safety requirements
- Recording and reporting to management (and regulators if required) all known damage
- Attending utility meetings and site Meetings with owners/contractors to help identify locations of gas, sanitary, and potable water
- Performing inspections on utility service connections from the customer's site to the distribution or collection systems (including but not limited to the installation of backflow prevention devices, water meters, gas meters and sewer inspection chambers)
- Performing nonfire suppression hookups and temporary meter installations at all fire hydrants and standpipes
- Assisting with and coordinating repairs to utility infrastructures, including emergency repairs to potable water, wastewater, and gas infrastructure and facilities
- Operating heavy equipment (as needed) to assist field staff
- Coordinating snow removal at the gas plant and fire hydrants, as needed for emergency access purposes
Preferred qualifications/skills:
- Minimum three years' experience in Utilities or a related field
- EOCP Water Treatment Certification Level II and/or; EOCP Wastewater Treatment Certification Level II and/or; EOCP Water Distribution Certification Level II (consideration will be given to operators with Level 1 certification in any discipline)
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, written skills and mechanical aptitude
- Strong working knowledge of chemistry and biology
- Knowledge of water distribution systems and valve maintenance, and knowledge of fire hydrant installation and maintenance procedures
- Experience as a heavy equipment operator
- Selfstarter able to work with little supervision and as a team player
- Knowledge of WHIMIS procedures.
Conditions of employment:
- Willingness to work shift work, weekends, statutory holidays, standby and overtime as required
- Willingness to work in a variety of terrain, and adverse weather conditions
Schedule:
40 hours per week. Scheduled days change as the winter/summer/shoulder season operations change.
