LRT Systems Maintenance Supervisor- Job Number : 45316Reporting to the General Supervisor, LRT Systems, the LRT Systems Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the safety, planning, administration, performance, and supervision of the field crews within the LRT Systems Maintenance team.

This includes maintenance crews for LRT Signals and traction power systems.

This position will work closely with engineering and LRT Operations to provide resources (people and equipment) for both systems maintenance and construction projects.

This position supervises a team of approximately 30 staff including a project coordinator (CSU 52), forepersons, and various electrical maintenance staff (IBEW).


As an LRT Systems Maintenance Supervisor you will:

  • Be responsible for the planned maintenance and planned repairs to the LRT Signals and Traction Power Systems. This includes building both short term and long term plans so that work can be prioritized and to maximize efficiencies with the short work windows that the team has to complete tasks
  • Be responsible for coordinating other staff involved in maintaining the LRT Signals and Traction Power systems and managing contractors and contracts that support the overall team scope
  • Manage contracts with maintenance providers and suppliers such as material supply contracts, locate services contracts, testing services etc.
  • Manage a 24 hour dispatch for immediate team response to systems issues affecting the operation of LRT Service: the immediate execution of short term repairs to restore LRT service and delivery of long term repairs to ensure system design compliance
  • Be responsible for interfacing with the public in response to inquiries and concerns
  • Approve expenditures for general repair work, manages the track and right of way operating budget and completes the monthly variance reports
  • Coordinate work with other City departments and contractors (Facilities Maintenance Services, Parks, EPCOR, Roadways Maintenance)
  • Be the Fleet Coordinator for the Maintenance Fleet which consists of light and heavy trucks, and heavy equipment. Approves major repairs, works on fleet replacements, and recommends vehicle scope changes
  • Ensure the effectiveness of work systems through timely, comprehensive, accurate and transparent reporting
  • Ensure the effective performance measurement is established, monitored, and that timely corrective actions are taken to ensure the efficient delivery of support and services
  • Provide overall quality assurance and control activities (ie training audits, hazard assessments, performance evaluations of employees)
  • Support General Supervisor with the timely notification and/or escalation of issues, with proposed solutions
  • Ensure the prudent and effective use of financial and human resources in the delivery of support and services
  • Determine budget requirements, monitors and manages costs and escalates issues to the General Supervisor as required for the LRT Signals and Traction Power Maintenance Program
  • Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Degree in a technical field
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience with a Degree/Diploma in a related field
  • Effective leadership skills with the ability to create focus, engagement, and commitment in complex environments with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to anticipate, assess and readily adapt to changing priorities, maintain resilience in times of uncertainty and effectively work and lead in a changing environment
  • Ability to effectively interact, communicate, influence, and collaborate with a variety of partners and stakeholders including staff at all levels, union representatives, vendors, and contractors
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence and judgment
  • Results driven focus with experience in accountability frameworks, and performance management systems
  • Project management skills with demonstrated ability to establish, direct and motivate staff to deliver work in a timely manner
  • Excellent negotiation, problem solving, and conflict management skills
