Caseworker; New Directions Program
Temporary, 37.5hrs per week until March 31st 2025 (includes benefits)

Start:
June 1st, 2024

Ability to work flexible hours including evening and weekends


The New Directions Program is a unique, gender-responsive program for female youth between the ages of 12-24 who are vulnerable, marginalized, in unhealthy relationships, exhibit negative behaviours or are at risk of gang involvement.

The New Directions Caseworker provides a strong mentoring relationship and encourages safe and healthy decision making, nurtures independence and skill development, and provides connections and referrals to community resources.

The Caseworker works directly with female youth within the Peel Region to provide one-on-one client support, case management, safety planning, and counselling.

The Caseworker should be knowledgeable of the issues surrounding female youth and their involvement and engagement in gang activity, the three main objectives of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) including; the prevention of youth crime, the use of meaningful consequences, and rehabilitation and reintegration through a relational supportive approach.


Areas of Responsibility:


  • Builds positive, respectful, and nonjudgmental relationships with female youth and their support systems
  • Acts as an advocate and educator with parents, schools, employers and other community organizations to facilitate the prevention/intervention process
  • Provides oneonone client support, case management and counselling in order to establish and provides the necessary continuum of support to allow the youth to set achievable and realistic goals in a supportive mentoring relationship
  • Arranges to provide youth with appropriate community resources such as; counselling services, education, employment supports, housing, and various other types of programs and services based on the individualized plan of care and/or accessibility within their home or chosen community
  • Ensures client progress through facilitation of individual programming, efficient case management and ongoing program development
  • Knowledge of community resources and services including, but not limited to, provision and access to food and clothing; accessing shelters or other appropriate housing options; access to health care (i.e. STDs, pregnancy, addiction, etc.); referrals to various counselling and victim services; access to financial supports, education; and employment supports
  • Participates in a team approach to client care, program and service delivery
  • Facilitates activities and programs that will assist clients in their emotional, social, educational development.
  • Provides informal supervision and support for practicum students and Agency volunteer to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of program services to clients
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with stakeholders and community partners within the community
  • Keeps abreast of trends, community resources and developments in the youth care profession by participating in workshops, conferences, and continued professional development
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate
  • A degree and/or diploma from a University or College in a related field with experience working with vulnerable populations; prior experience working with youth females is considered an asset
  • The ability to maintain and encourage confident assessment and counselling skills in order to engage, support, and interact with clients using a traumainformed approach
  • Knowledge on the issues surrounding female youth and their involvement and engagement in gang activity
  • Practical knowledge and experience facilitating gender specific and responsive programming
  • A thorough understanding of issues pertaining to youth
  • Demonstrated clientfocused counselling skills and role modelling
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven leadership skills
  • Ability to be adaptable with a flexible approach taking into consideration the unique needs and qualities of each client
  • Interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse client group in a diplomatic and nonjudgmental manner
  • Problem solving and leadership skills, with the ability to judiciously handle crisis situations with clients
  • A broad knowledge of community resources and the ability to strongly advocate for clients and make professional referrals

Mandatory job requirements:

  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR certification
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) criminal background check (completed within the last 6 months)
  • A valid Ontario driver's lic
