    About the Opportunity

    St. Martha's Regional Hospital (SMRH), located in Antigonish, has an opportunity for an anesthesiologist who is looking for a locum position or short-term appointment to join the team. The short-term appointment will be until approximately November 1, , however, if you are looking for a shorter locum period we welcome you to apply. This opportunity provides you the experience of working with a collegial team of anesthesiologists and surgeons in a rural community regional hospital. Opportunity exists to engage in research and/or have medical teaching positions with Dalhousie University, should that be of interest. The OR at SMRH is well equipped for laparoscopic surgery, with built-in screens. The first ERAS program in Nova Scotia has been initiated and piloted at SMRH, with plans underway to roll this program out provincially. SMRH is also leading the way in Nova Scotia in beginning to 'green' its OR operations, trying to reduce waste. SMRH is approximately two hours from the region's tertiary care pediatric facility, the IWK Health Centre, which provides neonatal support. St. Martha's Regional Hospital was founded in by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha and is approximately a 90 bed facility with more than 60 physicians practicing in a variety of medical specialties and sub-specialties.

    This facility serves a population of nearly 40, from Antigonish, Guysborough, and surrounding communities. Anesthesiologists are joined by colleagues in:

    • family medicine
    • obstetrics/gynecology
    • internal medicine (general and sub-specialty who cover the 6 bed ICU)
    • emergency medicine
    • geriatrics
    • psychiatry
    • pediatrics
    • hospitalists
    • plastic surgery
    • ophthalmology
    • otolaryngology
    • general surgery
    • radiology (U/S, CT, MRI, ECHO)
    • palliative care
    • visiting oncology and neurology

    Community based care is further supported by a men's and women's health centre, chronic pain clinic, methadone clinic, and youth clinic at the local high school. Physicians and all staff at St. Martha's Regional Hospital take great pride in providing high-quality care to patients and value collegiality in the work place.

    Responsibilities

    • duties include full scope of practice as an anesthesiologist providing care to patients within the eastern zone and participating in call
    • the physician will be responsible to the Zone Department Head of Anesthesia for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice, and will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Nova Scotia Health Authority
