POSITION PURPOSE:

The IPAC Supervisor is responsible for working within their scope of practice and utilizing their knowledge, skill, and judgement. Reporting to the Manager of IPAC and the Director of Care, Nursing. the IPAC Supervisor is responsible for assisting in planning, implementing, and integration of infection prevention and control plans.

During periods of non-active response, the Registered Practical Nurse will engage in relevant learning and planning work such as development of standard operating procedures, training, and quality assurance tools.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • License in nursing (RPN) with minimum 1year of clinical experience.
  • Current registration with The College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Excel written and verbal English
  • Solid knowledge of IPAC / PPE regarding infection prevention and outbreaks due to pandemic and influenza.
  • Excellent communication skills for work in a multicultural, multidisciplinary workforce.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Mandatory registration in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Successfully completed or currently in coursesin an Infection Prevention and Control Program or has postgraduate studies completed in Infection Prevention and Control
  • A minimum of 1 year of practical work experience as a nurse in the longterm care sector
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively engage with staff, residents, families, community professionals and various outside partners.
  • Solid computer skills using Microsoft Office programs (Word/Excel/Publisher/Power Point)
  • Knowledge of the Long-Term Care Homes Act and Regulations, Ministry Long Term Care Directives, the Registered Health Professionals Act, Narcotic Control Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other applicable legislation.
  • Assisting in coordination and implementation of infection prevention and control practices for the home.
  • Participate in the planning of an infection surveillance program and the management of outbreaks in consultation with the local public health unit.
  • Perform daily infection surveillance and develop the monthly surveillance report.
  • Educate staff on the principles and practices of infection prevention and act as a resource regarding infection prevention and control.
  • Monitor and investigate staff members' use of personal protective equipment and compliance with IPAC regulations.
  • Collaborate with the nursing team and maintain current vaccines for all residents; ensure the home is following the infection control guidelines mandated by the Long-Term Care Homes Act.
  • Assist in evaluation of training programs to ensure the needs of the home are being met.
  • Identify and report safety hazards, conduct regular safety inspections and follow safe working practices and behaviors.
  • Monitor staff compliance with infection prevention guidelines regarding the disposal of sharp and biomedical waste, use of personal protective equipment, hand hygiene practices and provide reports to the IPAC Manager.
  • Participate in analyzing infection trends, risk factors, and evaluate prevention and control strategies.
  • Assist and lead the annual influenza vaccination campaign.
  • Manage staff immunization requirements including upon hire as well as ongoing.
  • Manage Covid surveillance testing both routine and during an outbreak.
  • Perform and administer either nasopharyngeal or throat swabs for COVID 19 testing and rapid testing.
  • Manage the Hand Hygiene program for staff, residents, families, and contractors.
  • Assist in the management of outbreaks including notifying Public Health and Ministry of Health; implementing controls, precautions and required PPE; completing the outbreak summary report and evaluation of the control strategies.
  • Promote immunization with staff, residents, volunteers, and families which may include COVID19, flu vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, hepatitis vaccine and diphtheria/tetanus.
  • Conduct or arrange onsite clinics for immunizations.
  • Provide educational information to individuals and their families as appropriate.
  • Ensure annual creatinine levels are taken to calculate residents' Tamiflu (antiviral) dosing.
