The Organization


Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment.

RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury.

The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

We are looking for a
Tutor to join our team in Toronto.


About the opportunity


Reporting to the Principal, the Tutor is responsible for providing one-on-one and small-group support to elementary and secondary students staying at RMHC Toronto.

The Tutor manages communications with hometown schools and parents/caregivers ensuring students are kept on a consistent and up-to-date educational program.

The Tutor ensures that all students are taught in a safe learning environment; creates a positive learning atmosphere; develops and delivers meaningful lessons; and ensures that the holistic development of students is priority.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:


  • Tutor students in Grades 912, facilitating the teaching and learning of course materials sent by hometown schools and/or accessed online.
  • Provide weekly updates to the Principal on students' progress.
  • Work collaboratively with the school team to provide mentorship and timely feedback to student placements and volunteers, promoting engagement.
  • Develop and execute participation options in School Fairs for tutoring students monthly.
  • Facilitate the academic, emotional, and social success of elementary and secondary students by providing direct instruction in organizational, planning, study, and selfadvocacy skills.
  • Assists the Principal with interdepartmental requests (e.g., assisting in the stewardship of major donor requests and sharing appropriate social media stories as needed).
  • Establish clear expectations with students to create a caring and effective teaching and learning environment.
  • Communicate regularly, effectively, and respectfully with parents/caregivers in all written and oral interactions.
  • Performs other duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:


_ Education & Experience_

  • Postsecondary Education (or in the process of completion) in a relevant field.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience working with children of varying ages in educational settings (e.g., school, childcare centre, camp), including youth aged 131
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working as a tutor with the Ontario curriculum.

_ Knowledge, Skills & Abilities_

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present and clarify concerns and concepts to various audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to comfortably interact with all levels of the organization, parents, students, and volunteers.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deliverables in a timesensitive environment and adapt to frequently changing priorities.
  • Proven creativity to facilitate learning for students in a variety of grades with different interests and levels of understanding.
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and online learning platforms (e.g., D2L, Google classroom).
  • Ability to work effectively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Proven success working with students with medical or mental health needs is an asset.
