    Job Summary


    The Research Assistant will provide research support to Centre for Cardiovascular Innovation.

    Organizational Status
    The Research Assistant will report to the Finance and Administration Manager. Will receive direction and supervision from Finance and Administration Manager. Will work closely with other staff to fulfill the operational requirements of the Research Centre.

    Work Performed
    • Provides clinical trials startup and research grant applications support for the research team.
    • Ensures compliance with institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinical trials conduct.
    • Reviews, becomes knowledgeable about, and adheres to clinical research protocols.
    • Communicates and liaises with industry sponsors, granting agencies, coordinating sites, study sites, Research Ethics Board (REB), University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO), Office of Research Services (ORS), Research Finance and Research Institutes.
    • Prepares and organizes UBC and health authorities finance documents for research grants & clinical trials.
    • Tracking and monitor progress for invoicing for clinical trials and research projects.
    • Preparing reconciliation of grants and projects, initiating and following up on collection of funds due to research projects, inactivating grants and projects, and monitoring deposit of funds.
    • Maintains & updates tracking logs for clinical trials activities.
    • Develops excellent study specific work files and documents information precisely for clinical trials and research projects.
    • Communicates study procedures to clinical and research personnel, and provide updates and support to other staff when required.
    • Performs data entry in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Provides support to the research team in various functions as required.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement
    The incumbent must be able to work independently and within a team and exercise considerable judgment on a daily basis. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on research projects. There are time sensitive matters with deadlines that must be met in the office and missing such deadlines could have negative effects on faculty and opportunities being pursued, poor internal and external relations. A high degree of accuracy, a thorough understanding of policies and practices, the ability to anticipate, investigate and resolve problems, and the ability to meet conflicting demands are expected.

    Supervision Received
    Work with general direction and supervision from Finance and Administration Manager, as part of a collaborative team. This individual will be expected to work independently in accordance with established objectives; and exercise initiative and judgment in performing all work-related function.

    Explain procedures to new research staff and faculty

    Minimum Qualifications
    Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working in a research environment required
    • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Program e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
    • Experience with research finances preferred
    • Excellent organizational, communication oral and written English and interpersonal skills
    • Must demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, logical decision making
    • Must possess strong problem-solving skills, able to anticipate and resolve problems in a timely, effective, ethical, professional, and constructive manner
    • Must show strong negotiation, conflict resolution and rapport-building skills
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to be flexible, multitask and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to effectively work on multiple simultaneous projects and successfully prioritize to meet deadlines
    • Self-directed, highly self-motivated, assertive, enthusiastic and honest in the performance of all duties
    • Ability to work in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with UBC, Health Authorities policies and procedures, and ICH/GCP guidelines
    • Willingness to further professional knowledge through informal e.g. reading journals/books and formal education e.g. attending rounds, conferences, training programs
