Under the direction of the Manager of Childhood Learning and Daycare Team Lead, the Daycare Early Childhood Educator/Resource Consultant is responsible for planning and implementing an age-appropriate curriculum for the early childhood program.

The incumbent devises individual program plans for children with probable developmental risk factors or diagnosed special needs. He/she completes second stage developmental screening to complement Quality Child Care Niagara screening tools as requested.

The incumbent works in conjunction with staff, parents, and children to provide an inclusive learning environment that is designed to meet each child's needs.


Key Duties:


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate educational programs that support the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children including arranging equipment, cleaning and moving toys and equipment, and preparing and attending parent/teacher activities.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing environment (in all areas of the program) that is conducive to child development.
  • Carry out daily routines such as:
  • Toileting, preparing and serving snacks and lunches for all children.
  • Record keeping.
  • Report suspicion of child abuse to the FACS Niagara's Child Welfare service.
  • Complete visual health and safety inspections on a regular basis.
  • Open (unlock) and close (lock) the premises as required.
  • Arranges meetings and ensure appropriate resources.
  • Develops, monitors, and updates Coordinated Program Plans for children in accordance with their needs.
  • Completes second stage developmental DISC screening/functional assessments with children for whom followup is recommended by the Quality Child Care Niagara (QCCN) screening tools scoring outcomes.
  • Develops individual program plans for children who are demonstrating probable developmental risk factors or who have been formally diagnosed with special needs.
  • Recommends strategies and adaptations to promote inclusion; may involve program plan modifications, identifying and reducing barriers, completing functional assessments, and developing coordinated service plans which are reviewed regularly.

Collaborates and Consults

  • Provides consultative support to childcare programs in the implementation of the Quality Child Care Niagara screening tools.
  • Consults with agencies providing services and arranges for the sharing of information to promote team communication and collaborative supports.
  • Supports families and childcare programs in the referral of children to appropriate agencies for further followup and diagnostic assessment.
  • Consults with childcare program staff to implement the CARE plan.

Communication

  • Participates and communicates as a team member with other staff/agencies involved with children on caseload.
  • Maintains sensitivity and professionalism in supporting families.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents and accommodates parental preference around work schedules where possible.
  • Ensures the Supervisor is kept apprised of all matters of concern.
  • Reports workplace accidents/injuries in accordance with agency policies and procedures and ensures the supervisor is advised of any hazards he/she becomes aware of

Other Related Professional Responsibilities

  • Perform office duties such as answering the phones and checking the daily log, to ensure high quality of service for families.
  • Work in conjunction with Field Placement Coordinators from educational facilities and volunteer agencies to evaluate student and volunteer placements.
  • Act as a mentor/role model for students/volunteers from educational facilities and volunteer agencies.
  • Keep the Site Lead informed of any situation which may have significant implications for the child, the program and/or the Society.
  • Attend staff meetings during off hours as required.
  • Participate in training sessions to enhance professional practices.
  • Exercise appropriate personal and professional behaviour.
  • Respects parental decisions regarding recommended referrals/services for their child, provided it is not a child protection issue.
  • Adhere to professional and ethical standards and abide by applicable legislation.
  • Actively uphold the principles identified in the agency's Code of Ethics.
  • Identify individual professional developmental needs to the Site Lead in order to ensure that performance is maximized.
  • Works in compliance with OH&SA, utilizing protective equipment as necessary, and attends mandatory training as required.
  • Reports any hazard, missing or defective parts or equipment which may endanger self or another worker or any contravention
