Position summary:


The Quality and Risk Officer reporting to the Director, Quality, Risk, and Privacy will work with senior management and all teams to provide expertise in the area of quality and risk.

The Quality and Risk Officer will support the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of specific local and Hospital-Wide quality and patient safety programs and initiatives.

They will work to promote a culture of quality and safety through consultation, education and the development and oversight of organization wide Improvement Model.


Responsibilities include:


  • Identifying quality improvement, risk and patient safety related learning needs and deliver the education
  • Assisting in the development of methodologies, structures, tools and templates to support best practice in quality improvement and patient safety
  • Providing internal expertise in coaching and training staff in the use of tools and principles for improvement in quality, patient safety, effectiveness and efficiency i.e. Lean, Plan-DoStudy-Act (PDSA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Supporting teams to analyze and trend quality and safety data to determine potential areas for improvement and to utilize key tools and standards to design clinical and operational activities
  • Maintaining and supporting the online incident reporting system while fostering a culture of reporting and accountability
  • Investigating & analyzing patient safety events submitted through online incident reporting systems and ensuring that appropriate recommendations are effective and completed
  • Lead for quarterly development, reporting and annual refresh of corporate Balanced Scorecard
  • Collaborating in ensuring the integration of Accreditation Canada standards, Required Operational Practices (ROP)s and other related initiatives are met and reports are completed
  • Assisting with the development and evaluation of annual Quality Improvement Plans (QIP)
  • Coordinate Hospital wide efforts directed at the reduction, avoidance or elimination of identified risks. Act as a resource for departments and services in choosing appropriate strategies for mitigation of risks.
  • Current registration in a regulated health professional discipline preferred
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Certifications such as Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred
  • Educational preparation in quality improvement, certification in patient safety or risk management
  • Extensive knowledge of the quality, patient safety, risk management literature and applicable legislation
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in quality, risk, patient safety within a healthcare setting
  • Experience in the complex continuing care or rehabilitation sector is considered an asset
  • Advanced proficiency with adverse event management systems
  • Proficiency in use of office support software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and quality tools software packages i.e. Visio
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and motivate an interprofessional team.
