The Black Studies Program

The Black Studies program is an innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary program within the Department of Gender Studies.

Black Studies offers undergraduate degree programs as well as community initiatives, speaker series, and activist and networking opportunities that explore and engage the connections between social justice, decolonial thought, and practices of anti-oppression.


The Department of Gender Studies is home to the Black Studies program as well as the Gender Studies undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs.

Position Overview


Reporting to the Department Manager, and working closely with the Undergraduate Chair of Black Studies and the Black Studies Collective, the Black Studies Program Administrative Coordinator is responsible for the daily administration, operations and development of Black Studies undergraduate programs and community initiatives.

The Black Studies Program Administrative Coordinator is the first point of contact for faculty, staff, students, university and external community connected to Black Studies and serves as program liaison with faculty and staff in more than 25 departments, as well as the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Registrar's Office.

This position is the primary student academic advisor for undergraduate programs in Black Studies.

This position provides administrative support for Black Studies program initiatives such as coordinating experiential learning opportunities, student recruitment and engagement events, and activities including speaker series, partnerships, and internships, and promoting undergraduate and graduate programs.

The incumbent recommends and participates in implementing changes to the Black Studies program following university, faculty, and departmental policies/guidelines.

They support and develop anti-oppression strategies in Black Studies and Gender Studies, and across all university departments who attend to questions of racism, colonialism and anti-racism in particular.


The Black Studies Program Administrative Coordinator is a member of the Black Studies Collective, and is also part of a team that provides day to day administrative services in the Gender Studies Department.

This includes financial duties, timekeeping, communications, technology support, meeting preparation, and event coordination.


The Black Studies Program Administrative Coordinator brings skills and expertise in creative, collaborative, anti-oppression work that advances the department's commitment to social justice and social change.


Note:

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally work flexible hours including evenings and weekends to accommodate special events according to program and area needs.

This position provides the daily administration and operational support to undergraduate program including timely and accurate timetabling and registration.

This position is a key academic advisor to undergraduate students, and ensures that students experiencing challenges have access to resources to support their academic progress.

This position also provides overall administration of scholarships, awards and special accolades.

Administers the registration process, providing support and assistance with course substitutions, pre-registration, online registration, over-riding prerequisites, managing wait lists and reviewing late requests.

Provides data for timetabling activities, including instructor preferences, tier request, lab times, seminars, departmental meetings, feedback issues.


Manages files, tracking student progress, keeping accurate academic records, maintaining class lists and historical records including registrations, enrollments, faculty teaching assignments, exams etc.
