Description

The Classroom Support Worker will provide school-based and unit support to youth attending school while in the Adolescent Psychiatry Unit at Kelowna General Hospital.

Youth attending school in the APU may be experiencing mental, emotional and / or behavioural health concerns; and require additional support to learn new skills and coping strategies to achieve success in the school setting.


Hours / Schedule >
Full-Time / TERM POSITION

30-hours per week.

8:30am - 2:30pm Monday - Friday during school hours

  • Please be aware that this is a temporary position covering a leave of unknown duration, however at the end of the term, the successful applicant will be considered for other positions in the agency (as available) that match their qualifications and experience._

Responsibilities >
The Classroom Support Worker provides support to students attending the APU Classroom Program, and to the APU Teacher.


In addition, this role includes providing general support on the APU ward when school is not in session (ie: during school breaks).


  • Classroom Responsibilities Include:_
  • Building trusting relationships with youth by providing positive direction, encouragement and role modelling.
  • Supporting students to meet their academic goals, and to achieve success in the classroom.
  • Managing and redirecting inappropriate behaviours in the classroom.
  • Providing supervision and oversight.
  • Assisting with classroom activities and programming as directed by the APU Teacher.
  • Unit Responsibilities Include:_
  • Building trusting relationships with youth by providing positive direction, encouragement and role modelling.
  • Following unit safety protocols.
  • Supervising APU patients.
  • Informing APU Nurses and staff of unusual and inappropriate patient behaviours.
  • Cofacilitating groups, and assisting with unit programming.
  • Planning and participating in approved recreational activities.

Qualifications >

  • Other Skills and Attributes:_
  • Have experience supporting youth who struggle with mental health, low mood, and social / emotional challenges.
  • Be skilled at supporting youth to increase their coping skills and their understanding of mental health and wellness.
  • Have experience working within a school and community setting.
  • Have knowledge of community resources that enhance youth health and wellness.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and verbal / written communication skills.
  • Be detailoriented, organized and efficient.
  • Be skilled at managing multiple concurrent projects, assignments and tasks requested from multiple sources.
  • Function independently, and frequently under pressure.

Wage / Benefits >
$ $29.50 per hour based on experience and education.


Upon successful completion of a probationary period, full-time employees (minimum 20-hrs per week) are eligible for a full benefit package (including dental plan, vision coverage, life insurance, extended medical coverage, long-term disability plan, and RRSP contributions).

New full-time employees are eligible for 3-weeks paid vacation to start, and paid sick days as needed.
