This is a part time position at 0.80FTE (30 hours/week). Note that compensation will be prorated accordingly.


The Beaty Biodiversity Museum, part of UBC's Beaty Biodiversity Centre, houses over 2.1 million natural history specimens, presents educational programs and exhibits and includes a teaching lab, auditorium, and a museum store.

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is divided into several major collections - Spencer Entomological Collection, Cowan Tetrapod Collection, Fossil Collection, Fish Collection, Marine Invertebrate Collection and the Herbarium which has several collections within itself.


The Spencer Entomological Collection holds nearly 650,000 specimens and objects and is a major resource for research and undergraduate and graduate engagement for the Faculty of Science supporting the museum's public outreach and educational programming.

The Spencer Entomological Collection is overseen by the faculty Entomology Collection Director. A Collection Curator manages day-to-day activities in the collection.


Working directly with the Collections Curator - Entomology, the Entomology Curatorial Assistant is responsible for technical tasks in the daily operations of the Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC.

Job Description Summary

Performs technical tasks in the daily operations of the Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC.

Organizational Status

The Entomology Curatorial Assistant works in the Spencer Entomological Collection and reports directly to the Collections Curator.

Additional Interactions include working with the Faculty Director of the Spencer Entomological Collection, museum personnel, students, volunteers and other visitors to the museum.

Work Performed

  • Participates in the curation of specimens in the collection.
  • Assists with the acquisition and incorporation of new material into the collection.
  • Organizes the collection s digital resources, including databases and photographs.
  • Participates in education and outreach activities of the museum.
  • Answers public inquiries and requests.
  • Handles delicate, invaluable, and irreplaceable pinned insect specimens and associated data labels.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement


Poor performance may jeopardize data integrity, yield inaccurate results, and potentially limit the research endeavors of the Spencer Entomological Collection.

Supervision Received

Receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures. Carries out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities under general supervision. Work is supervised by the Collections Curator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own

Preferred Qualifications

High School graduation. Undergraduate B. Sc. in Biology or Forestry, or a related discipline preferred;

Training in insect or spider taxonomy, identification, and systematics, with expertise in at least one insect or spider family; Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Experience working with museum specimens and a knowledge of their archival needs perferred;
  • Demonstrated understanding of specimen and image management systems, including Excel, DarwinCore, FileMaker Pro, and LAS Montage;
  • Ability to interpret scientific literature and to associate scientific literature with current project objectives;
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines;
  • Good manual dexterity and the ability to work sitting or standing for long periods of time;
  • An articulate, responsible, and energetic individual who takes direction and is able to work independently and within a team environment;
  • Possession of excellent scientific language skills and the ability to perform tasks with precision and forethought.
