Description

PURPOSE:

Working within the Hwialusmutul' Team, under direction of the Senior Nurse Program Manager and in collaboration with the Community Health Nurses (CHN) and other health team members, the Family Spirit Worker will provide outreach services for perinatal women and their families with young children ages 0-6 years, which can include personal visits, education sessions, and group programs.

This is a full time, 35 hour per week, term unionized position ending on or about June 30, 2028 based on funding.

This position will work primarily in the office with moderate local travel required.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, this position starts at $ $30.32/hour ($52, $55,187.23/year)


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Deliver a structured curriculum that focuses on delivering health promotion based on traditional Qwut'sun culture, values, and Hul'q'umi'um' language.
  • Invite families to join the Family Spirit Program, designed to promote family emotional and behavioural wellbeing through culturally led practices and teachings
  • Integrate parenting techniques and promotion of positive caregiverchild interactions that support children to achieve social, emotional, cultural, and cognitive development
  • Use strengthbased and culturally grounded approaches.
  • Conduct clinic, home, and community visits
  • Represent the Family Spirit Program by participating in a variety of internal and external committees and working groups
  • Ensure timely documentation and communication
  • Ensure strict confidentiality and cultural safety of all clients while receiving health services
  • Attend monthly department meetings and weekly team meetings
  • Conduct formal evaluation of program sessions with participants and staff
  • Other related duties

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Post-Secondary education in Early Childhood Education or Child & Youth Care is an asset
  • 1 year experience working in community health is an asset
  • Certification in First Aid / CPR-C / Foodsafe is an asset
  • Experience working in a First Nations community
  • Knowledge of the culture, Hul'q'umi'um' language, customs, and traditions of Qwut'sun people
  • BC Drivers' License and reliable vehicle
  • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check
  • Effective December 1, 2021: full vaccination against COVID19 is required to be eligible for employment at Cowichan Tribes. Employees must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of employment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Strong knowledge of Cowichan culture, Hul'q'umi'um' language, customs, and traditions relating to pregnancy, birth, and parenting
  • Ability to role model effective and nurturing parenting skills and positive parentchild interaction with a nonjudgmental approach and acceptance of each family
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a team
  • Able to foster and build relationships within community
  • Welldeveloped written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to meet physical demands of Family Spirit Worker duties: move up and down with ease, sit on floor, bend and stoop to meet children's eye level, long periods of standing and walking with the ability to lift up to 25lbs
