In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Food Service Worker 2 carries out a variety of duties in the cafeteria according to Food Safe protocols such as preparing, measuring and combining food ingredients, setting up cafeteria station, portioning and packaging food, and assembling sandwiches and salads.

Also operates a cash register, balances the float and deposits cash; checks and records food and fridge temperatures; checks and records food and fridge temperatures; stores food items in cold storage, washes dishes and pots; cleans food area, fridges and storage areas; and washes floors and removes garbage.

Performs related clerical duties.


What you'll do

  • Prepares sandwich fillings, salads and other related food items by methods such as combining, mixing and/or blending ingredients; measures, mixes, grates and/or blends food ingredients; and assembles items such as sandwiches and salads. Prepares fruits and vegetables by washing and cleaning, peeling, slicing, dicing, and grating, and portioning. Counts, weighs, places onto dishes, wraps and labels food items.
  • Operates the cash register according to established procedures, weighs salad bar items to determine price, receives payments, and makes change for purchases. Follows established cashing out procedures such as balancing floats and daily sales.
  • Sets up cafeteria station by turning on the hot wells, ensuring that the coffee machine and juice fountain are stocked, and setting up the salad bar. Serves food by methods such as preportioning food in accordance with portion control guidelines,
  • Garnishes and displays food by arranging and serving food in a manner which attracts customers and ensures maximum revenue is generated.
  • Promotes and provides customer service by following customer relations protocols such as receiving customers in a friendly and courteous manner, receiving complaints, investigating problems and taking corrective action.
  • Responds to customer/client inquiries regarding product content by referring to product ingredient manuals and providing product information as requested.
  • Checks and records food and fridge temperatures by inserting thermometer in edibles and reading fridge thermometers. Advises supervisor of discrepancies arising from the actual versus required food and beverage temperatures.
  • Places leftover prepared food items in cold storage according to established protocol by performing duties such as wrapping, labeling and dating items. Retrieves and utilizes leftover prepared food items, opened packages and/or cans before preparing further amounts. Discards refrigerated leftovers according to protocols.
  • Ensures all condiments, cutlery and napkins are stocked and rotated according to Food Safe protocols.
  • Strips, racks and washes items such as dishes, pots, pans and utensils; operates dishwashing and/or pot washing machines; and stacks clean dishes and utensils.
  • Maintains work areas such as kitchen, dining room, food preparation and storage areas by performing cleaning duties such as sweeping and damp mopping floors, cleaning and sanitizing ward cutlery, mugs, dishes, counter tops, sinks, machines and equipment, and spot washing walls and splash areas; and removes garbage as required. Cleans equipment such as fridge, display units, slicers, coffee machine, hot wells, and water and juice fountains.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering the telephone and documenting food, fridge and dishwasher temperatures, and cleaning audits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications:


  • Grade 10 plus one (1) year's recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Food Safe Certificate.
