    Founded in 1976, the school operates under the direction of Haahuupayak Society's Board of Directors. Tseshaht First Nation is one of 14 tribes in the Nuuchahnulth Territories. The school community is nestled adjacent to the city of Port Alberni, which has a population of approximately 18,000.

    The school has an average student enrolment of 155 and delivers the current BC Curriculum to its Kindergarten to Grade 7 students. At Haahuupayak school, inclusive education and a vibrant culture and language program are the foundational pillars that guide our practice.

    At Haahuupayak, it is our goal to provide an education that meets educational needs of today, in a manner consistent with Nuuchahnulth cultural teachings, haahuupa, meaning "continuous teaching with care."

    At Haahuupayak, children are guided to meet their potential, while gaining knowledge and appreciation of their culture.

    The Inclusion Support Teacher provides a continuum of school-based services, working in collaboration with classroom teachers and school-based teams to assess, implement and monitor suitable interventions and services for students with diverse learning needs. The IST also works in collaboration with other school and external specialists utilizing an Integrated Resource Model.

    The IST engages in collaborative decision-making, assessing students' strengths as learners, assessment of the learning environment, analysis of the instructional content and techniques and the strategic selection of intervention strategies that provide opportunities for success.

    The role includes case management for students meeting Ministry of Education and FNESC criteria for specialized services, ensuring appropriate documentation and programming are in place, ongoing consultation with parents, school and staff, to provide services to identified students in the school setting.

    The IST will have a comprehensive knowledge of classroom and inclusive education practices and be familiar with current BC Ministry of Education Legislation and Policies and FNESC Special Education Program Policy.

    Responsibilities :

    • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other specialists to assess, plan and assist in teaching to diversity and promote the principals of inclusion in all educational settings
    • Use systematic observation and collection of data to establish understanding of student strengths, the learning environment, and student functioning in multiple domains.
    • Administer and interpret a range of formal testing instruments level A, B (C highly desirable)
    • Analyze instructional content and techniques
    • Use a tiered approach to collaborate and implement strategic learning scaffolds that address priority learning needs.
    • Work in close partnership with parents and build effective relationships to support shared understanding and to establish goals to promote school success.
    • Coordinate the School Based Team
    • Liaise with outside agencies to organize support for students
    • Ensure that designated students meet the criteria as laid out by the Ministry of Education or FNESC and provide case management services
    • Provide in-service to teachers and paraprofessionals on best strategies and current educational best practice to promote student success
    Qualifications
    • Successful classroom teaching experience with diverse populations
    • Comprehensive knowledge of current topics and research in inclusive education
    • A broad knowledge of diagnostic curriculum based and norm referenced assessment used in the identification and instructional support planning for students with learning, physical, emotional and neurodivergent needs.
    • Certification in B level testing and interpreting C level testing
    • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse teams and families facing challenges
    • A professional teaching certificate and eligible for membership in the TRB
    • A two-year diploma in special education or equivalent.
