    Unit Summary

    The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children's Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonates and their families and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.

    Position Summary

    As a member of the healthcare team, supports patient care through equipment and supply management, maintenance of a clean, safe environment and participation in selected patient care activities. The HCA provides unit support to patients, families and those providing service and/or care. Functions according to the job description for Technical Healthcare Aides. This position will have specific responsibility within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Level II Intermediate Care Nursery.

    Qualifications

    1. Grade 10 education; must be able to read and write English proficiently
    2. Completed CSAO Techniques course
    3. Completed Heart and Stroke Foundation course in CPR
    4. Minimum 2 years technical experience in a similar role (the handling and care of delicate equipment) within a healthcare environment
    5. Experience maintaining and stocking materials and supplies
    6. Computer familiarity
    7. Working knowledge of Universal Precautions and WHMIS
    8. Demonstrated effective communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills
    9. Demonstrated initiative and judgment appropriate for the position
    10. Ability to accept assigned or delegated functions, set priorities and organize work accordingly
    11. Ability to lift using appropriate lifting techniques and bend, push and pull using good body techniques
