Organizing Officer
The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) is seeking to
one-year limited term,
full-time position of Organizing Officer.


CAUT is a progressive labour and professional organization representing more than 72,000 faculty, librarians, researchers, academics, and general staff at 124 universities and colleges.

It promotes the economic and political interests of its members, advances the standards of the profession, and seeks to improve the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada.


Reporting to the Director of Political Action and Communications, and under the coordination of the Senior Organizing and Education Officer, this position is responsible for planning, developing, and leading the execution of strategic campaigns and associated deliverables.

The incumbent has demonstrated expertise in membership engagement and campaign design and deployment tactics that lead to member recruitment and engagement.


Duties and ResponsibilitiesWorks in consultation with the Senior Organizing and Education Officer to execute the operational priorities and work plans for all membership engagement and organizing campaigns and initiatives in support of CAUT's vision and objectives. Contributes to and implements a strategic organizing plan to identify and recruit new CAUT member associations. Supports member associations and members to engage in political action through campaign development and support. Develops and executes campaigns that address complex issues, build awareness, drive member engagement, and support bargaining, in response to member association needs. Leads the execution of organizing/certification drives and campaigns at the local, regional, and national level. Coordinates, writes, and edits campaign materials, articles, leaflets, information kits, and advisories. Participates in developing and delivering training programs on campaigning and membership engagement. Brings ideas, energy, and a passion for analytics to campaign efforts to ensure continuous improvements. Liaises with affiliates, partners, community organizations, coalitions, government agencies and officials as required. Contributes to maintenance of the CAUT's membership engagement database. Adopts new tools and systems as relevant to the role. Adheres to established processes and quality control systems for policy workflow and recommends enhancements to improve quality or efficiency. Participates in Political Action and Communications team and Campaign and Education team activities including operational planning, adoption of cross-functional initiatives, and regular team meetings to ensure alignment on goals, progress against priorities, and two-way communication. Other related duties as assigned by CAUT management.
HoursFull-time position, 35 hours per week. May be required to work overtime on occasion. Some travel within Canada may be required.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:
Completion of post-secondary education degree in industrial relations, political economy, or relevant field. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a similar capacity, including extensive work in member engagement and organizing. Significant experience in the labour and/or social justice movement. Considerable experience in developing campaign strategies, projects, and plans. Experience working with CRM and/or Member Database Management, websites, and online registration systems. Professional experience in an association, trade union, and/or not-for-profit organization preferred

Language Requirements:
Ability to work in both official languages at an advanced level is a strong asset; fluency in verbal and written English essential

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of the federal and provincial labour codes and union certification processes. Knowledge of online campaign techniques and various social media. Excellent knowledge of the labour movement, trade union practices and organization, principles of labour, member engagement, organizing, and human rights legislation, and the current social, political, and economic issues that affect CAUT members. Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing to a range of audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build appropriate and constructive relationships with internal and external contacts, founded on credibility and trust. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and with tact as part of a team. Ability to work independently in consultation with the Senior Officer while exhibiting a high degree of initiative and sound judgment. Demonstrated planning, time management, and project-management skills to effectively balance competing requirements and multiple priorities and deadlines with mínimal supervision.
