The company owns and operates the Ekati Diamond Mine, located in Canada's Northwest Territories. In addition to its mining and exploration operations, Arctic Canadian has offices in Canada and Belgium.


Position Overview


As a member of the Surface Mining Team, the Surface Mining Blaster will report to the Team Leader, Surface Mining, and work a two (2) weeks on, two (2) weeks off rotation at the Ekati mine site.


The Surface Mining Blaster is directly responsible for safely and efficiently carrying out blasting operations at the open pit mines in and around the Ekati Mine Site.

This role requires a thorough understanding of blasting principles, as well as practical experience in drilling, charging, and detonating explosives.

The blaster shall ensure all personnel who handle or load explosives on a pattern are properly trained and qualified, and shall liaise with the Dispatcher, Driller, Surveyor, Blast Helper, and Support Equipment operators.

The incumbent performs all duties for this position in accordance with Company Policies, Management Systems, and Standard Operating Procedures.


Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the equipment logbook (stemming loader, light vehicles), Blasters load sheet, and all relevant documentation is completed reporting all the information relating to the assigned task
  • Ensure the safe and efficient undertaking of the explosives loading and initiation functions relating to surface blasting at Ekati.
  • Utilize sound blasting practices following the established Safe Procedures and Work Instructions
  • Understand the correct process to develop and implement the blast design tie in for the respected Surface Mining patterns being blasted.
  • Maintain inventory control and perform blast magazine audits to fulfil the requirements of the management of an explosive's magazine in compliance with ACDC, Provincial and Federal Laws.
  • Application of safe work practices and continual improvement in Surface Mining operations work methods to achieve Zero Harm
  • Operation of Surface Mining Equipment to meet daily plans and production targets
  • Monitoring of equipment condition, performance, and reporting deficiencies to ensure stable operation
  • Personnel development to contribute to a high quality and effective Surface Mining Team
  • Compliance to Environmental and Waste Management policies
  • Contribute to the development of trainees through coaching, mentoring, and sharing of information
  • Contribute and show desire to engage in meaningful "courage to care" safety conversations
  • To foster an environment of teamwork, trust, respect and embrace diversity
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with a keen ability to relate to a wide spectrum of individuals in a teamoriented environment.
  • Able to give clear instructions via the 2way radio system.
  • Be prepared to complete other duties and assignments outside their current job description

Education/Experience & Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certification in blasting is required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in open pit mining blasting operations
  • Good understanding of blasting principles, including explosives and initiation systems
  • Ability to guide drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to all rules and regulations
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, and ability to follow instructions and work independently
  • Willingness to work in a remote location, and in adverse weather conditions
  • Physically fit and able to work within the safe confines of handling explosives products and carrying their weight
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate mining vehicles, such as light vehicles and blast hole stemming loaders
  • Relevant Ekati, Departmental and Equipment Pavilion folder updates completed and signed off on relevant pieces of equipment to conduct the role of a blaster

Working Conditions
The Surface Mining Blaster works in an open pit mine environment, where temperatures can vary in the subarctic environment. The work can be physically demanding, involving lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.

The blaster is required to work 12-hour steady dayshifts on a two week in / two week out rotation in harsh winter environments.

Shift-end blasting might be required on occasion. The blaster must strictly follow all mine safety regulations and use personal protective equipment pertaining to the role at all times
