The Opportunity:

To provide administrative support to the Legal Department.


Accountabilities:


  • Provide administrative support to the Legal Department, including drafting correspondence, and maintenance of the departments physical and electronic filing and management systems.
  • Act as a resource for the department and other internal partners including coordinating workflow, administrative support, and ensuring work is completed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist lawyers in preparation for trials, settlement conferences, and mediations, by drafting and preparing various legal documents including Statements of Claim, Pleadings, List of Documents, Releases, etc.
  • Conducting research, organizing, and analyzing information for the department and City leadership within the organization relating to the areas of insurance and civil litigation.
  • Providing general reception duties for the department.

Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • Certificate or Diploma from a recognized Paralegal, Legal, or Office Administration Program.
  • Relevant Experience
  • 13 year's experience in a position of similar responsibilities and duties.
  • Experience using Legal Document Management Software
  • Experience with insurance, civil litigation and municipal law matters
  • Familiarity with legal terminology, legislation, and regulations related to insurance, civil litigation and municipal law
  • Familiarity with court processes and forms and civil court proceedings
Specific Skills/Certifications

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Word processing skills and ability to use basic software programs.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision and in a team setting.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of legal terminology, legislation, and regulations related to insurance, civil litigation, and municipal law;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Current Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Certificate of Conduct

Working Conditions:


  • This position will be required to work primarily in an indoor office environment. This means that there may be infrequent exposure to minor disagreeable weather conditions.
  • Frequently dealing with members of the public and program participants.

Physical Requirements:


  • Normal physical effort is required day to day for movement around the workplace.
  • May be required to sit or walk occasionally for an extended period of time.
  • Occasional lifting and handling of equipment is required.

Hours of Work:

Mon-Fri, 9:00-4:30
