Job Summary

  • The Department of Process Engineering and Applied Science encompasses Biological and Chemical Engineering as well as Food Science. Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Technician will work closely with faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students to provide skilled precision work and technical support in teaching and research laboratories through the implementation of specialized skills to solve complex mechanical and electrical problems, including design problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create parts to build and modify teaching and research equipment using various machinery and tools.
  • Set up lab stations for a variety of courses. Confirm the proper operation of experimental apparatus, safety equipment, tools, and consumables, and repair or replace these when necessary.
  • Advise faculty and students about mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical matters as they pertain to the design and fabrication of lab equipment, experimental set ups, and design projects.
  • Provide primary technical support to researchers and graduate students in the department such as technical advice, machining, 3D printing and fabrication services, sourcing materials, moving, assembling, calibrating, repairing, and operating equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on lab apparatuses and equipment, clean and maintain equipment and tools, and perform routine safety inspections of teaching labs to make sure equipment and lab environment are in good condition and safe.
  • Supervise all students who are working in labs and shops to ensure that they work in a safe manner.

Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.


Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology with approximately five years' related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience using CAD software.
  • Aptitude for operation of various equipment and instruments, machining and welding experience.
  • Experience with machine electrical systems and circuits.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Assets

  • Knowledge of instrumentation and using data acquisition systems.
  • Experience working in an academic environment.
