    Position Summary

    UHN is looking for a skilled, dynamic, and motivated Clinical Engineer to join our Medical Engineering Department. The Medical Engineering Department is an agile and vibrant team that is responsible for managing medical equipment and technology across all sites and programs of UHN. The Clinical Engineer is an integral part of the department.

    This position is part of the Engineering Team and will report to the Manager/Clinical Engineer. This position will be integrated in departmental support teams and will work closely with the other engineers, technologists, and managers in the department. This position will also collaborate closely with medical, nursing, and other clinical professionals to guide, design, develop, and promote safe and effective medical device use.

    The Clinical Engineer will manage the entire lifecycle of UHN's medical device assets by implementing strategic plans (ex., applying fleet planning principles), supporting the procurement processes (ex., RFPs, contracts and specifications, technical knowledge) and leading medical device implementation projects ( project management). The Clinical Engineer will also provide an additional level of support by using engineering/scientific principles to solve practical problems and participate in safety incident investigations. The Clinical Engineer will collaborate with hospital clinical and support teams to develop strategic plans for the acquisition and management of medical equipment at multiple sites consistent with the vision, mission and goals of the hospital.

    Duties

  • Leading medical equipment technology planning and implementation projects
  • Analyzing medical equipment technology needs and market options in collaboration with Medical Engineering, clinical and procurement teams
  • Taking responsibility for strategizing, procuring, preparing, and implementing new medical devices with the collaboration of various stakeholders (clinical, FM-PRO, Digital, JDMI, IPAC, Privacy)
  • Providing consultation and technical support for healthcare technology in education and redevelopment initiatives
  • Investigating incidents involving medical technology, analyzing findings and implementing/recommending corrective measures
  • Leading groups in the implementation of medical device-related projects that may be time- and cost- sensitive; and evaluating and reporting on progress and outcomes of the project
  • Managing service history data within existing maintenance management databases; reporting out data to clinical and non-clinical teams and analyzing costs and benefits of various service options and strategies
  • Supporting quality improvement initiatives to maximize equipment uptime and ensure superior customer satisfaction (ex., creating policies, procedures and processes)
  • Supporting the work of Medical Engineering teammates and Clinical Engineering Interns
  • Qualifications

  • Completion of recognized Masters degree in Clinical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, or recognized engineering equivalent
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Ontario with the PEO required within 2 years of incumbency
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience required; new graduates still encouraged to apply
  • Experience working in a hospital or healthcare environment preferred
  • Certification in Clinical Engineering preferred
  • Applicants with proven recent and related training and experience may be considered
