*NOTE: This Unity Health position will be based at St. Joseph's Health Centre but will require assistance at the St. Michael's Hospital Pathology site, dependent on need.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform gross description and dissection of surgical tissues removed for microscopic interpretation, which includes selection, preparation and submittal of samples for histologic examination.
  • Assist in autopsy services to setup and perform postmortem examinations.
  • Assist in the teaching of prosection of various organs as required to pathology residents and rotating medical students.
  • Interact with the operating room staff and clinics regarding the submission of tissue specimens for processing.
  • Coordinate the temporary storage, retention and disposal of tissue specimens.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety precautions and hygiene.
  • Perform other functions necessary for providing anatomic pathology services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree/diploma and/or training in biological sciences, allied health sciences (MLT) or related field required.
  • Prior Pathologists' Assistant experience (one to two years) preferred.
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Satisfactory attendance record as per the Health Centre's Attendance Management Program Policy SJ
