    Unit Summary

    The Labour and Delivery unit at Hamilton Health Sciences is a family-centered tertiary care facility, which provides support and care to women and their families living in the Central-South region of Ontario. Care is provided during the antenatal, intra-partum and postpartum phases of pregnancy for women and their families who have experienced complications during pregnancy and to women and their families who have not experienced complications. Two areas make up the Labour and Delivery area; a 5-bed Outpatient Assessment Area and an inpatient area, which consists of 9 Labour/delivery/recovery rooms, 2 Operating Rooms, an Obstetrical Post Anesthetic Care Unit and a Neonatal Resuscitation Area.

    Position Summary

    As a member of the healthcare team the Heath Care Aide will work as part of the interdisciplinary team within the Women's Health Program including Labour and Delivery, Ward 4C, 4B and 4F Clinics. The HCA will support patient care through equipment and supply management, maintenance of a clean, safe environment and participation in selected patient care activities. The HCA will provide unit support to patients, families and those providing service and/or care.

    Qualifications
  • Minimum Grade 12 education and must be able to read and write English proficiently
    2. Has completed the CSAO techniques course, or has the ability and willingness to do so within 4 months
    3. Ability to complete 4-6 weeks of intensive on-the-job training as determined by individual assessment
    4. Minimum 2 years technical experience in a similar role within a healthcare environment (experience in the handling and care of delicate/expensive equipment)
    5. Minimum 2 years experience maintaining and stocking materials and supplies
    6. Demonstrated knowledge of Universal Precautions and WHMIS
    7. Demonstrated computer skills in: MS Exchange/Outlook, Windows 98, Meditech Materials Management
    8. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with members of the healthcare team, patients and families, both verbal and written
    9. Ability to demonstrate attributes that contribute to a respectful caring environment and desires to be part of a family-centered maternity environment
    10. Demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary team and to accept assigned or delegated functions while working independently and unsupervised when appropriate and necessary
    11. Demonstrated ability of accepting responsibility for tasks and demonstrated initiative and judgment appropriate for the position
    12. Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work accordingly in response to the units' needs
    13. Demonstrated ability to deal with various hospital departments effectively and collaboratively
    14. Demonstrated ability to lift using appropriate lifting techniques and bend, push and pull using good body mechanics
    15. Ability to complete 4-6 weeks of intensive on-the-job training as determined by individual assessment
